April is almost done and we are heading into May and that means DocFest22 is just around the corner! If you aren't already familiar with DocFest check out the fabulous program of events at this year's conference. Five days of everything to do with Graduate Research! Fantastic keynote speakers, plenary discussion panels, seminars, research papers and posters, and the Three-minute Thesis. And it's easier than ever to join in- just one Zoom link- no registrations or complicated logins. No need to register - just save this link into your calendar for direct access. This is the first year Charles Sturt has participated in the INMIS program, with funding for the places provided by the Office of Research Services and Graduate Studies. We wish all the participants the best of luck and look forward to hearing back from them about their experiences.

How about sharing your research story on community radio?
 The Researcher Development team are very excited to be working with the team at Radio 2MCE to produce a monthly program featuring the research stories of our graduate research candidates. On the third Thursday of the month at 5.30pm we will feature two interviews where researchers will be able to share their research and a little about their research story. Interviews will be recorded in advance via zoom so location and time zones are not an issue.
If this is something you would like to participate in please submit an Expression of Interest form and our team will be in touch to book an interview.

Fulbright Australia offers scholarships to take you on an academic and cultural exchange, pursuing research or study at the forefront of your field, and experiencing life abroad in one of the most diverse and fascinating democracies. Our scholarships are available across all career stages, and all academic fields.
Which Fulbright category is right for you?
POSTGRADUATE — for postgraduate students undertaking their Australian PhD to conduct research in the U.S. for 4-10 months, OR for students to enrol in a U.S. graduate degree program (e.g. a Master’s) for up to two-years.
POSTDOCTORAL — for individuals (who have completed their PhD in the past 5 years, or are in the last year of completion) to undertake postdoctoral research in the U.S. for 3-10 months.
SCHOLAR — for academics (at Associate or full Professorial level) and mid-career professionals (with an undergraduate qualification and minimum 10 years work experience) to undertake research and/or training in the U.S. for 3-4 months.

Calling for ambitious female PhD students across Australia & New Zealand
We are seeking female PhD students to apply to join the 2022 six-month mentoring program, as mentees.
For its sixth year, L'Oréal Australia and New Zealand will connect the current L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Fellows with passionate and ambitious female PhD students as part of their mentoring scheme.
Our For Women in Science Fellows have established themselves as exceptional researchers, communicators and leaders within their scientific fields. We know how important it is for female role models to inspire and instil confidence into other women, especially in the early stages of their career. We believe by fostering a mentoring scheme where our Fellows can share their knowledge and experience to budding female scientists, we will provide an invaluable opportunity to develop the necessary skills and instil confidence in our future women leaders.
Applications close for mentees will occur on Thursday 28th April, 11.59pm
To be eligible as a mentee, applicants must:
- Be currently enrolled as a PhD student (either full-time or part-time) at an Australian or New Zealand university or research institute.
- Have completed at least 1 year of their PhD (or received confirmation of candidature).
- Work within scientific fields including life sciences (including medical sciences), physical sciences, computer science, engineering and mathematics. Psychology, science education and social sciences are not eligible for this mentoring program.
PhD candidates will be selected based on the following key selection criteria:
- Clearly identified strengths and weaknesses.
- Addressing any relevant ambitions or goals for your future and how a mentor could facilitate your success in achieving these.
Five mentees will be chosen to take part in this mentoring scheme (4 within Australia and 1 in New Zealand). Along with one-on-one mentoring sessions with our current fellows, this scheme will include a number of workshops catered to the mentees’ ambitions, such as:
- success in academia (with past L’Oreal Australia & New Zealand fellows)
- making your research stand out (with current Jury members and past Laureates)
- exploring non-academic roles in science (with scientists working at L’Oreal Australia)
In addition to the mentoring program, the mentees will be invited to attend the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science ceremony in November, as our special guests with travel expenses fully covered by L’Oréal Australia & New Zealand.

University Research Grants and Wildlife Ecology Research Scholarships are open!
The Australian Wildlife Society University Research Grants are scholarships offered to honours
or postgraduate students at Australian universities. Each year, ten $3,000 grants are awarded to members of the Society. Student membership is free, and you can join online at: www.aws.org.au
Grants are available for research projects of direct relevance to the conservation of Australian
wildlife – flora or fauna. Grants may be used to purchase equipment and consumables, travel
expenses related to field research, or attend a conference where you present your work.
Applications close 31 May 2022.

PhD Top-Up Scholarships - Applications now open for 2022 awards!
JDRF Australia is inviting applications for 2022 PhD Top-up Scholarships.
PhD Top-up Scholarships are designed to support and encourage PhD students pursuing research in the field of type 1 diabetes. The Scholarship will provide successful candidates with additional funding, on top of their PhD stipend, full-time or pro-rated part-time, contingent to satisfactory progress.
Applicants must be:
- The recipient of either a Research Training Program Stipend, NHMRC Postgraduate Award or a University-funded PhD Scholarship
- Not receiving any other PhD top-up funding
- Pursuing research relevant to type 1 diabetes
- An Australian citizen or permanent resident residing in Australia

This workshop is being held as part of DocFest22. Increasingly, Higher Degree by Research students are expected to publish peer-reviewed journal articles arising from their masters or doctoral research. Publishing in peer-reviewed journals is important because evaluation by professionals verifies that the article meets high scholarly standards and enables you to be part of a scholarly community. It’s the means for establishing and maintaining an academic reputation—and winning promotion and grants. This 3-hour workshop will cover how the peer-review process works and introduce you to strategies for: using an abstract as a planning tool for writing the article; targeting the journal and persuading the editor; getting the writing done; reviewing and revising your text. Three-minute thesis - Pitch Practice
 We have a fabulous number of 3MT entrants for this year's heats and as always an amazing array of research topics to learn about.
To help our presenters prepare and rehearse their 'pitch' we are holding two 'Pitch Practice ' sessions on Tuesday 3rd and 17th May at 10:00-11:30 am. Bring along your slide and your take the opportunity to get some feedback and hone your presentation skills.
 The 3MT Heats will be held as part of the DocFest 22 program and everyone is most welcome to join us in the audience.
