SC BBQ Newsletter from Destination BBQ

Hey <<First Name>>

Just a quick message to share a few things with you. Before we get to that, hope you and your loved ones had a safe and happy Easter.

Jim

Give Me a Ring

Three days of testing, countless batches of batter, and almost 4000 words later, I am happy to share with you a copycat recipe for the onion rings so many folks enjoy at the Bessinger family of restaurants in the Lowcountry, Bessinger’s, Melvin’s, and Robert’s.

Per Melvin’s owner David Bessinger, all three sister restaurants share the same basic onion ring recipe. Unfortunately, he wasn’t willing to share that recipe with me; however, he did say their pre-packaged batter mix would soon be back on their shelves.

I wasn’t willing to wait any longer, so I set out to duplicate their recipe, or at least come as close as I could. Odds are that I don’t have the recipe exactly right, but I am confident the recipe creates something true to the original.

Check out the recipe here: Bessinger’s Onion Rings Recipe (Copycat)

LOVE10

I mentioned in the last newsletter that I had been using a platform called Bonfire to create a new SC BBQ T-shirt shop.

I will continue to add new designs over time, but I believe I have all of the designs from the old CafePress shop ported over, and a couple of new ones added.

Check out the shop and let me know what you think. I am always open to ideas and suggestions, so feel free to send those along.

And if you happen to see something you like, use the Discount Code LOVE10 for 10% off your purchase.

Grow Together

You may have noticed the annoying little icon in the bottom right side of the website.

Did you know that thing is actually there to help you? It looks like this:

This widget is called Grow, and if you think about it you’ve probably seen this very thing on other websites. Let me tell you a bit about it.

See that heart? If you like a page, you can just click the heart icon to bookmark it for quick access later. In this case, 22 people have used the widget on this page.

And the weird symbol thing on the right? That serves a couple of purposes. If you click on it, it will open up and look like this:

From here, you can Search the website, check out all your Bookmarks, or Share this page on Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest. Here, I can also see that 8 people have saved this page and 14 have shared it.

While that’s all nice and wonderful, what’s really cool is that it works across all websites that are using Grow, and there are lots!

So your bookmarks don’t just work for Destination BBQ, they work for EVERY site running Grow. Here’s what I see when I click on my bookmarks:

Notice that I have a couple of pages on Destination BBQ bookmarked and pages from other sites as well.

Very convenient and useful. And these bookmarks are accessible from the widget on any site running Grow or your main Grow dashboard.

So, I hope you will take advantage of it. In fact, you may want to in the long run.

Have you noticed almost all newspaper sites now require a subscription to access the articles?

Pretty soon, because of changes in internet privacy and security policies, it’s very possible most of the sites you enjoy will start putting up some sort of login feature, even if they don’t charge for access.

Well, that’s really what Grow is for. If you have a free Grow account that you’ve logged into, you’ll automatically be able to skip logins on any site that uses Grow.

Well, that’s it for today.
