Business Leaders for Climate Action
BizforClimate is a platform for Advocacy and Action. We are mobilizing business owners to advance climate solutions and support policy directions for the rapid transition to an emissions-free economy. Companies from all sectors are voicing their support for climate action by signing the Climate Action Pledge

As Earth Day 2022 approaches, we are forewarned of the urgency to act on climate change, and to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions, in all their forms, from every sector of the economy. And we are determined to act.

As Earth Day’s vision reminds us: “the world needs transformational change.”  The climate crisis cannot be solved without business, government, and civil society working together. We must invest in and scale solutions, and set new policy directions to build the sustainable, emissions-free economy of the future.

BizforClimate believes business owners and corporate leaders can be powerful agents to drive the changes we need to see, and we invite all to join our cause. It can start with one action: the Climate Action Pledge

Extreme Drought in Morden, MB Revealed Need for Sustainable Action in the Industrial Sector

In many places in the world, droughts are a common occurrence. Droughts can cause disruptions such as wildfires, poor farming conditions, and reduced clean water availability. After a combination of a short winter, and minimal rain throughout the spring and summer of 2021, the City of Morden declared extreme drought conditions – an unusual occurrence in the province of 100,000 lakes. The water level in Lake Minnewasta (Morden’s water supply) eventually dropped to more than 12 feet below normal levels. As a result of the extreme drought, restrictions were put on water consumption, and Morden’s industrial sector was asked to voluntarily reduce water consumption by 30%.

Operating in such conditions, Decor Cabinets’ facility management implemented measures to ramp up water conservation efforts anywhere we could to reduce our impact on the city’s water supply. Measures included rain collection, high efficiency fixtures, timed washroom faucets and communication with employees, which proved effective in sustaining the water supply while also saving money, which prompted the question internally, “Why weren’t we doing this all along?”

When Decor Cabinets’ owners Stan and Connie Pauls met with BizforClimate in the fall of 2021, the evidence was made clear on several things: (1) Air pollution is causing the global temperature to rise, causing unusual and harmful weather in unexpecting climates, and (2) the opinions on the severity of climate change are polarized and often politicized.

BizforClimate proposed a Climate Action Pledge, already signed by over 100 businesses, which is galvanizing businesses in standing up for the key fundamental of environmental sustainability – our global climate. Stan and Connie measured the idea carefully with Decor’s Environmental Mission, “to leave behind more than we take.’’ After considering the needs of future generations, Decor signed the pledge just minutes after the meeting.

While there are many financial advantages to strong environmental programs, Decor CEO Stan Pauls stated, “profitable or not, taking care of our earth is simply the right thing to do.” Decor Cabinets continues to take the Climate Action Pledge to heart in its environmental management.

New IPCC report tells us:
We need to adapt

The United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its latest assessment report on climate change mitigation. The stark warnings remain as clear as ever, while adding that reducing greenhouse gas emissions won’t be enough to protect lives and livelihoods from climate change. We urgently need to transform key facets of our lives, such as how and where we build our cities and how we grow food.
