Fresh fine art will be in full flower this Thursday at Life Styles' Spring Awakenings art show. Enjoy work by our talented Life Styles artists—as well as exceptional pieces created by professional artists working throughout NWA.
As part of Thursday’s Spring Awakenings art show, we invite you to take a stroll down memory lane. Long-time Life Styles employee and current Operations Director Dottie Hattal has created an incredible quilt commemorating each year of Life Styles’ long-standing Polo In The Ozarks event, which ran from 1990 through 2020. The quilt will be a featured artwork in the show.

Having started with Life Styles in 1985, Dottie herself is a walking storehouse of Life Styles memories. She laughs remembering the early Polo years: The herculean effort required to hoist and navigate borrowed bleachers on flatbed truck from the University of Arkansas to the polo field in Goshen; the "rock parties" which had Life Styles staffers meticulously walking up and down the polo field removing rocks that might harm the horse's hooves; and the year she volunteered to man a tailgate tent and nearly landed herself in the catering business, thanks to the many fans of her homemade Cheesecake Minis, German Chocolate Cake, and Brownies that year.

From the very start of the Polo era, Dottie intended to create a quilt from the ever-popular t-shirts produced for the event. She set at least one tee aside each year for this intended purpose. You'll find the inaugural Polo image near the center of the quilt, in pink and green colors. Dottie's personal favorite is the image featuring the multicolor polo ponies on a light blue background (bottom left of quilt). A couple of the t-shirt images were created by the father of Life Styles client Fraser Larsen—her dad, Read, was an accomplished artist.

Adding even more sentimental value, Dottie created the quilt on the Kenmore sewing machine she received as a gift from her parents in 1975, on the tails of the very first quilt (a "tie" quilt) she made in seventh grade. Following its coming-out party at Thursday's show, Dottie plans to put the Polo quilt to use on her bed rather than let it "gather dust" on a wall. Maybe this way it will inspire her to count polo ponies—rather than sheep—as she falls to sleep each night.

As we celebrate creativity this month, it’s natural for Jennifer to come to mind.  A Life Styles client for seventeen years, Jennifer has spent many happy hours at our beloved Blair Center For The Arts (home to our renowned art program and venue for Thursday’s Spring Awakenings show, the Blair Center formerly housed the Law Offices of Jim Blair; he and his wife Nancy generously bequeathed the space to Life Styles in 2009).

“I like making stuff and doing stuff, and learning new things,” explains Jennifer, “Just don’t make me glue things!” Providers and Life Styles staff alike often point to this signature self-deprecating humor as an exceptional coping mechanism for Jennifer. In fact, some think her upbeat attitude and ability to take things in stride have helped her overcome some serious health challenges—evidenced in party by her ability to consistently outperform statistical odds and doctor’s predictions.

Not only does Jennifer simply enjoy art-making, she also recognizes its therapeutic value. “I like how it relaxes me,” she says. In the studio, Jennifer enjoys painting, jewelry making, and creating with Perler beads. And afterwards, her Life Styles staff note the change in her energy levels, explaining that “coming to the Blair Center seems to motivate her to get up and participate in her day.”

Regardless of what she next attempts in the studio, or in life, Jennifer’s support staff have every confidence in her material and emotional success, noting that “no matter how difficult the goal, she finds a way to not only find joy in the successes, but happiness in the failures as well.” Sounds like Jennifer has found a way to turn living itself into something of an art.
