CHANGING LIVES IN TANZANIA | SPRING 2022
Food prices are skyrocketing in Tanzania

How a faraway war hurts our kids

Though the fighting in Ukraine is more than 5,000 miles from Arusha, it impacts Africa and LOHADA children in very real ways. The cost of food staples such as cooking oil has doubled. Meat is so expensive that it is out of reach. Soap, detergent and medicine are more costly each day. Our supplies of beans and corn from last year's harvest at Mt. Horeb Farm will last until September. Though we are growing vegetables there this year, these alone will not sustain 200 children. If you are able, we ask your help through this crisis. We trust, as always, that God will provide for these young ones.

Provide Food Relief
Remember those coupons you gave to family and friends at Christmas? Here are the shoes your donations bought! Thanks again to the Bay Hope Church coffee baristas, who raised more than $650 to buy shoes, socks and underwear, and also to Karen Jacobs, Lisa Leaper, Diane Engelhardt, Amy Stanley for their contributions.
Girl Power
The Beauty for Ashes empowerment group held its first luncheon in February, when the young women heard from manager Lidya of Green Mountain Hotel on how she worked her way up in the tourism industry. Weekly meetings with social workers also help other young women with children seek opportunities for training, employment and education. Special thanks to Karen Jacobs and Marissa and John Moran for their recent donations to Beauty for Ashes; the families from Valencia, Spain who did holiday fundraisers; and Jennifer Jasper Smith for the donation that made this program possible.
Students continue to become computer literate as they take advantage of laptops and newly installed WiFi at Camp Joshua School. Here, they look up the instructor's question, "What is the world's largest animal?"
CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS
We're working hard to improve soggy conditions at Camp Joshua School, where the rainy season can make a mess of the soccer field, paths and classroom floors. A load of sand was used to even low spots and absorb rainwater; a new concrete drainage system will channel water off of the newly landscaped soccer field.
Finish the hall!
Thanks to Marsha and Frank Gabriel and Chad, Sheila and Amelia Krakow for kicking off the drive to finish construction on Camp Joshua's dining hall! The building is the only gathering space for all LOHADA kids to eat, worship and have fun. Construction began in 2017, but the floor needs tiles, the windows have no glass (the rain comes in) and the walls are unplastered. Join the Gabriels and the Krakows in helping finish this most vital space for our kids!
Golden Grace Health Center

Golden Grace provides low-cost health care, including outpatient services, limited inpatient care, obstetrics and newborn checkups, vaccinations, HIV treatment and x-rays to people in Shinyanga, western Tanzania. Golden Grace's mobile clinic serves outlying areas and during the pandemic has brought food, water and blankets to the elderly women and families of LOHADA kids. COVID-19 resulted in people feeling unsafe when seeking medical care, so little income was generated. Still, free services have been provided, including prenatal care, newborn checkups, childhood vaccinations and HIV medications. Click below to learn more about and support our life-saving work.
