L'ÉQUIPE-CHOC ENGLISH COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER

April 2022
Dearest Colleagues,

As warmer weather is (hopefully) around the corner, our energy level is likely to increase. This is why we decided that the focus of our newsletter this month would be self-regulation.

Psychologist Barbara Fredrickson has found that too much positive emotion—or too little negative emotion—makes people inflexible in the face of new challenges. So, self-regulation is really about moderating our emotions to bring up that balance. Here are a few emotional self-regulation strategies that can help you avoid any drain of your energy and maintain a healthy learning atmosphere.

First, monitor what you are feeling so that you do not suppress intense positive or negative feelings. Research has shown that suppression uses up cognitive resources making you unable to carry out the task since the unpleasant emotion is not likely to go away. Second, you can focus on self-confidence, which provides you with the power to regulate your emotions in different situations and respond appropriately to embarrassing situations or problems. Then, coping proactively is essential in order to feel secure and comfortable, but you also need to expect the unexpected and plan for it, as you cannot anticipate all possibilities, but you can prepare for more alternatives. Finally, make sure to lift your spirit in difficult moments, even when you are overwhelmed by things that are out of your control. In these moments, it is not easy to regulate our emotions, but is it definitely worth it.

Our emotions are central to the construction of our identity, so when they are not managed and controlled appropriately, they can hinder students’ learning. Keep that in mind and give self-regulation strategies a try.

All our best,

Julie & Micheline
