           Parish Offer Covenants

This year, the Diocese of Carlisle has begun the process of entering into Parish Offer Covenants with mission communities, and hopes that most will have entered into a covenant by 2025.

Head of Finance, Ric Jaques, explains: “A covenant represents a three-year commitment between mission communities and the Diocese to work together in the spirit of partnership, to commit to a certain level of finance (in terms of the level of Parish Offer from the mission community and level of investment from the Diocese) and to work to achieve the deployment of resources/people based on the mission community’s mission and ministry plans."

The stewardship and finance teams have recently held a series of meetings  with mission community leaders to explain more about the Parish Offer covenant and will continue to offer support.

The Rev Katharine Butterfield,  East of Eden Mission Community Leader, shares her experience of entering into a Parish Offer covenant with the Diocese.

She says: “Because we are in a covenant relationship… I think perhaps we have had more say, we have been able to… work out what we think will be best for our Mission Community”.
Bishop's Advisor for Women's Ministry

The Diocese is to have a new Bishop's Advisor for Women in Ministry from Sunday 1 May.

The Rev Canon Angela Whittaker will take on the post following the retirement of the current office holder, the Rev Canon Ruth Crossley.

Angela will continue to draw alongside and support those women in ordained ministry across the Diocese and will also sit on the Bishop's Senior Leadership Team.

Bishop James said: "I'd like to thank Ruth for all she has done in the support and encouragement of her colleagues' ministry. I know they have truly valued the knowledge that Ruth has been there to come alongside them as they deemed necessary. Likewise, I am thrilled that Angela has accepted the invitation to take on the post. As someone who was ordained in 2000 she will bring a rich experience and knowledge to the role."

Meanwhile, later this year Ruth will take on the role of Bishop's Officer for Retired Clergy.

Parish Buying - Energy Audits

A new round of Energy Audits will be available later this spring via Parish Buying – and they come with a £150 reduction in the £445 fee for the first 100 churches to sign up.

In these days of energy consumption concerns, an Audit is one practical step you can take to identify opportunities to reduce energy use, costs and carbon emissions in your church.

Your Audit will include an assessment of the feasibility of energy efficiency measures and renewable energy technologies – all with the goal of reducing your energy consumption and carbon footprint.

Each church is different, but typical energy savings can be around 20% of current consumption.  The offer is open to all Church of England churches.

Successful projects have included a theatre production on artificial intelligence; a collaboration between a church and a local science education centre; and new ‘Messy Church Does Science’ materials.

Applications are currently open for a new round of projects to take place from this summer; the closing date is Monday 2 May. Ten grants of up to £10,000 are available, and ECLAS are particularly looking for projects which will engage the wider community.
