May 2022 - Premiere of Rhythmic Identity

In August of 2020, we initiated the creative process for a brand new evening of work choreographed by chuthis. Artistic Director, Peter Chu. Due to the pandemic, we began this work virtually in our respective homes and time zones until July of 2021 when we were finally able to safely gather in person! We worked for four weeks at Dance Connection in Scottsdale, Arizona and continued the creative process. Now, after two years in the making, we are thrilled to announce that this May we will reunite once more and finally bring Rhythmic Identity to fruition!

Next month, we will spend three weeks in creative residency at The Institute for Contemporary Dance in Houston, culminating in two performances on May 27th & 28th, as well as three days in a technical residency at Zilker Hall. These exciting opportunities mean we have an immediate need for financial support! We cannot sustain this project without donations from our community. Many of you have consistently supported us throughout the years, and if you are able, we hope that you are willing to do so once more.

Read more about the new work below, and save the date (May 27th & 28th) for the premiere of Rhythmic Identity!

Rhythmic Identity is a triple bill that comprises three works: Tracing Rhythms, Get Out, and Inform(ed). Rhythmic Identity celebrates the both/ands of one's lineage, instead of exploring the contrasting differences.

Rhythmic Identity grooves through:
BOTH a rise AND fall of a body,
BOTH a straight AND supple spine,
BOTH a relaxed AND rooted posture,
BOTH percussive AND sustained movement, and
BOTH urban AND traditional forms.

The vibrations and sounds generated from music connect humans at a profound level as rhythms can heal and bring communities together during times of sadness, grief, love, and joy. Rhythms connect us deeply and play a vital role in enhancing peaceful connections amongst diverse communities. It helps us co-exist! Rhythmic Identity takes action with a peaceful heart yet firm intention!

— Peter Chu

The two new creations, (un|re)cover and will(O), premiered last weekend during GroundWorks Spring Performance Series 2022.

You can catch two more performances of these new works on May 6th & 7th, 2022 at 7:30pm (Eastern Daylight Time) in Cleveland, Ohio! To purchase tickets or for more information, please click here.
