Social Media: Zapper or Sapper?

Dear Reader,

What is your relationship with social media? Is it bringing you energy every day? Is it making a positive contribution to your life? Or is it sapping the energy from you and it's just negativity and bad habits?

I can suggest three strategies for social media:

First of all, never follow a “study” on social media. I always ask if this is a real scientific study, or is it on social media and not in a proper scientific journal, where you get peer reviewed and there’s a robust research process in place? Why is it on social media? That alone makes it very suspect.

Secondly, what we've learned on social media is that the person who can be the loudest, the most obnoxious and the most regular, just keep repeating things - the most political therefore - that person gets all the likes, gets all the followers. After a while, people start following this person as though this person has got “all the knowledge” in the world. And yet, it may be an idiot with his or her own agenda, and because he or she has so many followers, you should follow that person as well. So be careful about that.

The third thing is the habit forming nature of social media. If you go to social media regularly to stay in contact with friends and family, see their pictures and celebrate with them; celebrate birthdays and that type of stuff, that is good. But if you go there every time you get bored, every time you're supposed to do this you go off into social media and you get sidetracked the whole time, it’s become a negative force in your life and it just takes energy from you.

So there you have it. Three tips to make social media something that will make you a better person and help you go forward and maybe find joy at the end of the journey.
