Congratulations to our 2022 Educational Studies Student Recognition Awards Recipients!
|
On April 6, 20222, we hosted our inaugural Educational Studies Student Recognition Awards. During the event, we recognized many of our outstanding students for their many achievements throughout the year and their entire time in our department. The awards were hosted by department chair Dr. Lori Patton Davis and associate chair Dr. Marc Guerrero. Thank you to all of the faculty who nominated students to be recognized and congratulations to all of our award recipients! Educational Studies programs rated highly in the latest U.S. News and World Report rankings!
|
In one year, the College of Education and Human Ecology doubled the number of specialty programs recognized as being among the top 10 such programs in the nation, from three in the 2022 rankings to six for 2023.
Six Ed Studies programs were ranked in the top 25 nationally, including:
- Student Counseling – No. 4
- Educational Administration – No. 6
- Higher Education Administration – No. 6
- Educational Psychology – No. 12
- Special Education – No. 15
- Education Policy – No. 24

Open Positions for the EHE Graduate Student Advisory Council
|
The EHE Graduate Student Advisory Council has two openings for graduate student representatives to serve on the council. The organization is committed to working toward the betterment of the college and contributing to the overall success of graduate students by providing feedback and voicing concerns impacting graduate students, promoting mutual respect among faculty, staff, and students, and supporting opportunities for graduate students to engage in networking, collaboration, and professional development experiences.
Interested students should complete the application for their respective programs by Thursday, April 14 at 11:59 p.m.

GTA Toolkit: Beginning Steps of Course Design
|
This workshop will introduce participants to backward design, an approach to course design that focuses on producing student learning. Participants will have the chance to practice developing course goals and learning outcomes in an environment where they have the feedback and support of other graduate instructors at Ohio State.

Wellness Opportunity
|
Are you looking to enhance your physical activity this spring? Students in Exercise Science will be conducting Comprehensive Fitness Tests as part of their final evaluation for the capstone class in the major. We are looking for those interested in being participants for these tests....they are FREE!!! Please complete these forms and email them to either sanchez.1094@osu.edu or schumacher.261@buckeyemail.osu.edu in order to schedule a time for the 90-minute assessment. You will undergo body composition testing, a cardiorespiratory fitness test using an ECG, flexibility, and strength measures for a complete and holistic assessment of your fitness. At the end, the students will provide you an 8-week exercise program written based on your test results and your specific goals! Testing will occur the week of April 25-29, and we have one time slot Monday, May 2 in the afternoon.

Summer ESL graduate-level courses for international students
|
Our ESL Program wants to make sure students are aware of two graduate-level courses for international students that ESL is offering this summer:
EDUTL 6911: Writing for Coursework
This course is designed for international and second language masters and doctoral students who need assistance with the composing and writing stages of course-related projects or papers (such as a research papers), graduate school/department requirements (such as a candidacy exam papers, concept papers, conference papers and presentations) and supporting genres (such as the statement of teaching philosophy and personal statement).
EDUTL 6913: Thesis, Proposal, & Dissertation Writing
This course is designed for non-native English speaking master’s and doctoral students who need assistance with the composing and writing stages of their thesis, proposal, or dissertation. The course consists of whole-class sessions that address general genre and rhetorical features of dissertations/proposals, as well as one-on-one tutorial sessions that address individual student needs with regard to revision of their work already in progress and/or the drafting of a new chapter or section.

Human Resource Issues in (and coming out of) a Pandemic: An Employer Discussion |
This seminar will feature four panelists from the financial services, hospitality and healthcare sectors. Each will provide background information, and discuss workplace issues and activities within their respective organizations, and will address questions from the audience. This seminar is part of the courses ES WDE 5624 Foundations of Workforce Development, but is open to any undergraduate or graduate student interested in employment and workplace issues. Refreshments will be provided (sponsored by the OSU Eta Chapter of Omicron Tau Theta). Questions? Contact Dr. Chris Zirkle.

OUAB Grad/Prof Quiz Night |
Hosted by the Ohio Union Activities Board. Join us as grad/prof students get together for a night of trivia and fun! Pre-arranged and impromptu-created teams compete in a night of trivia. Prizes are awarded to the top team of the evening. Check in begins at 6:30 p.m. First question begins at 7 p.m. All teams must register for each quiz night. Please visit ouab.osu.edu/grad-prof/social-engagement-programs/quiz-night for more information on how to register. Teams may include up to 50% non-student guests. Due to overwhelming popularity, registrations the day of the event may not be available. Check out the website for fuller details. The registration period for a quiz night begins at the conclusion of the previous quiz night.

QMC Speaker Series Spring 2022: Lessons from the Calculus Knowledge Assessment |
Hosted by the Quantitative Methodology Center (QMC). Presented by Dr. Jim Fowler. Dr. Fowler built the adaptive learning platform that powers MOOCulus, a massive open online course that features over 25 hours of calculus videos and exercises. This course was initially offered on Coursera during the Spring Semester of 2012–13 and had 47,000 students enrolled in the course, with several thousand successfully completing the 15-week course. Dr. Fowler’s talk will highlight the lessons he has learned from developing his Calculus Knowledge Assessment and how it has helped him develop stronger pedagogical insight on teaching.

OSU Inter-Professional Council Annual Summit |
The theme for this year’s Inter-Professional Summit is “Buckeyes Learn the Spectrum”, focusing on Autism and Neurodiversity. The IPC’s goal of this event is to raise awareness and educate professional students at Ohio State on how they can better support Autistic and Neurodiverse clients as well as their Autistic peers. Panel discussions by self-advocates and professionals from around the U.S. will help inform attendees, plus the keynote speaker is Haley Moss, the first self-identified autistic lawyer in Florida. The summit will be held in the Ohio Union Great Hall and is free to attend.
