Holy Week: His Journey, Our Victory

As we arrive at the Sixth Sunday in Lent and the beginning of Holy Week, our attention is drawn to two sets of related yet contrasting events. On the Sunday before Jesus died, he rode triumphantly into Jerusalem on a donkey as the crowds covered the road with palm branches and shouted “Hosanna!” This Sunday, our service begins with our Sunday School children processing into the sanctuary waving palms and singing Jesus’s praises.
But Jesus’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem had a purpose far beyond receiving the praise of those who accompanied him. As we sing in one of our Palm Sunday hymns, “Ride on, ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die” (CW 411). On the day on which the people of Israel selected their lambs for the upcoming Passover, Jesus entered Jerusalem as God’s chosen Passover Lamb. In a matter of days, he would pour out his blood to rescue the world from its slavery to sin. Our Lord’s upcoming passion also demands our attention on this day, for it was to suffer and die that he rode into Jerusalem on that donkey. And so, after the procession of palms, we will hear the history of our Lord's suffering and death from the gospel of Luke to re-trace the saving steps our Savior took before his glorious resurrection on Easter morning. And we will close our service as we receive holy communion together.
In this way, we will have the opportunity not only to celebrate our Savior’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem but also to see the purpose for which he rode on in such majesty. In lowly pomp he rode on to die.
This Sunday's service leads into three more days of special worship opportunities. View the video below for a reminder of the blessings of these days, and note the times of these services mentioned below. Please join us this Holy Week and Easter!

Yours in Christ Crucified,
Pastor Tim Wagner

At present, we meet on Saturdays from 10:00 am until noon at St. Peter. We at 922 Ministries would like it known that we would be willing to help other churches or WELS members start their own mental health ministry.
