Loreto Highlights Update - 08th April 2022

Y5 and Y6 Swimming Inter House Competitions
Throughout the term, pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 have been swimming at GASA Swimming Pool. They have been taught the correct technique for backstroke, breaststroke and front crawl and concluded their unit of swimming with an Inter House competition. Every pupil competed in at least one individual race to gain points for their House, the event ended with some incredibly exciting medley relays. The winners of the Year 5 Inter House were St. Anne’s with 93 points and the Year 6 Inter House was won by St. Catherine’s with 105 points. The total of Year 5 and Year 6 points were added in order to determine who was the overall Swimming Champions of 2022, which was won by…St. Catherine’s! Congratulations to St Catherine’s and to all swimmers who took part!
A special mention must go to Julian Rocca (St. Anne’s, class Y5N) who broke a school record for Year 5 Boys Backstroke (22.00s). Due to the new format of this Inter House competition, there were four new school records in the medley relays. Well done to all the swimmers from Year 5 St. Catherine’s Girls, Year 5 St. Anne’s Boys, Year 6 St. Anne’s Girls and Year 6 St. Catherine’s Boys.

Year 4 Learn About Holy Week
Mr Earle taught religion lessons in Year 4. Palm Sunday was brought to life in our classrooms where pupils welcomed Jesus with Palm leaves. They also re-enacted the Last Supper, sharing bread and wine (juice!).

Lenten House Photography Competition
During this Lenten period, Upper Primary pupils were asked to participate in a House Competition on photography. Pupils submitted a photograph capturing one of our Mary Ward values - Justice, Joy, Freedom, Sincerity, and Truth. There has been a fantastic turnout with some brilliant skills demonstrated, making it very difficult to choose the winners. Entries have been displayed in the school corridor and judged by some of our staff who are skilled photographers.

Mr Reader
Our Mr Reader awards scheme is well under way. Pupils have had their badges presented to them by the Library Prefects. Well done to everyone and keep reading those books.

Ronda Trip
Last week, Year 6 pupils went on a trip to Ronda. It was an early start with pupils meeting on the other side of the frontier to begin their journey by coach along the winding roads to the mountaintop city that is set dramatically above a deep gorge.
The day began with a visit to the Carmelite Convent where Fr. Charlie Azzopardi joined us to celebrate mass with the order of nuns who reside there. Pupils presented their food offerings during the offertory. After mass, Sr. Jennifer, a Carmelite nun from Gibraltar, spoke to the pupils and shared her experience of living in a cloistered order. The nuns at the Convent are keepers of a treasure; one of the most important holy relics in Spain, that hand of St Teresa of Avila. Pupils were fascinated by this! The nuns served delicious cakes, before we set off on a tour by foot of the city. The final stop was a visit to ‘El Museo Mondragon Palace’ but the day was not complete without a quick stop back at the Convent to pick some mouth-watering treats from the nuns. It was a wonderful experience and a very enjoyable day.

Confirmations
Some of our Year 6 pupils received the Sacrament of Confirmation at St Joseph’s Church this week. Monsignor Paul Bear confirmed the candidates in a very reverent and beautiful ceremony. It was a special day for our pupils and their families.
A special thanks to all those involved in the preparation of the students and to those involved on the day.

Faith Diary
This Sunday, properly known as ’Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion’, is one of extremes. Mass starts with the Palm Sunday Procession, which includes the reading of the story from Luke’s Gospel of Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem, when he was cheered by great crowds of people shouting ‘Hosanna!’ and waving palm leaves- symbolic of victor-, to welcome the man they thought had come to overthrow the Romans and become their new King. Their jubilant mood did not last long. Before the week was out they would be shouting once more, but this time they would be shouting ’Crucify him!‘ instead. Little did they know that his new Kingdom, a spiritual kingdom based on love and forgiveness rather than violence and oppression, would indeed be established, not through the public acclaim of his triumphal entry into Jerusalem, but through the personal suffering of his crucifixion on Mount Calvary. The story of Christ’s Passion, taken from the Gospel of John, and the Holy Week that follows, take us on that painful journey with him. It is a journey that will end not with his hideous crucifixion and death in fulfilment of the Old Testament prophecies, but with his glorious resurrection and the establishment of the eternal Covenant promised in the New Testament - his holy church on earth.

Year 3 Literacy
As part of the Literacy curriculum Year 3 have been learning about synonyms. (A word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase in the same language.) The pupils had fun looking at excerpts from the BFG by Roald Dahl, brainstorming how words could be changed.

Easter Celebrations
Year 3 have been learning about the importance of Easter; celebrating new life and the resurrection of Jesus. We made Easter cones with treats from the Easter bunny and beautiful Easter cards.

Using ICT
Year 1 pupils have been using the iPads and Flipbooks to record the results from the work they have produced in lesson this week.

Gold Book
Well done to pupils in Lower Primary and Foundation Stage 2 who were presented with their Gold Award certificates and gold pencils.

It's A Bugs Life!
Year 2 have been studying habitats. The pupils have learnt about microhabitats, going on a minibeast hunt up in the Mount.
