Adelphi's Blended Meetings and Outdoor Meetings

Please join us for worship!  We offer four choices on Sundays:

  • The blended meeting in the meeting house at 10 a.m.
  • The blended meeting on Zoom at 10 a.m. OR
  • Outside in the Memorial Garden at either 8:45 or 10 a.m.

Both outdoor meetings for worship will be in the Memorial Garden, since First Day School has now started. For those coming into the meetinghouse for worship, masks and vaccinations are still required, to protect the most vulnerable among us.  Please see the general guidelines here for everyone who enters the meetinghouse for worship.

And the Children?

First Day School is open and joyful.  The Nursery opens at 10. Other children begin in meeting for worship with their parents and then, at about 10:20, move to their classes.  Classes will be held outside unless the weather is cold and rainy.  The high school group will meet once a month on Sunday evenings (April 17, May 15, and June 12) from 5:30 to 7 with Jamie Demarco and Sara Dean.  Here is the full roster of classes and teachers.

And, yes...Easter Egg Hunt

On Sunday, April 17th, we will have an Easter egg hunt
starting at rise of meeting - about 11:20 - so parents can join the fun.

Potluck Has Resumed

The (small) Hospitality Committee has stepped forward to host a potluck for all of those who are attending in person, whether indoors or out. But the committee is only the host.  The rest of us should plan to bring food or drinks to share, help with set-up, and stay to help with clean-up.

Food will be served inside and enjoyed outside.  Please wear your mask when you bring your donations, pick up your meal, and help with cleanup.

Coming Right Up

On Sunday:
Meeting for Worship for the Conduct of Business

At 12:15 on Sunday, April 10, we'll meet to attend to our business together.  All are welcome to participate.  The meeting will be held on Zoom, using the same link as for Meeting for Worship.  Friends who wish to meet in the meetinghouse should arrange to have a phone, tablet, or other device to connect to Zoom in order to hear (and possibly see) all Friends who have something to say.  The clerk will be in the meetinghouse. The agenda and materials you'll need for the meeting are here in this folder.  If you cannot access the folder or some of its contents, please contact the recording clerk right away.

And Tomorrow:  Poem as Portal

Saturday, April 9 from 10-noon on Zoom

Friends take a single poem where they need it to go, and from that new perspective discover what had been hidden.  Join thoughtful, respectful seekers in new explorations, and share in the harvest.  If you would like to join in tomorrow, please contact Judith Goedeke through Breeze to receive this month's poem, queries, quotes and Zoom link.  Everyone joining in should have a journal or other materials handy to use during time for quiet reflection.  You are warmly invited.

In and Around Adelphi Meeting

Update: The Lodins

Our Afghan friends, the Lodin family, are settling in.  They now have internet service, and a big TV, and a home full of furniture. Several family members will be getting bikes within the next week. The kids are picking up some English. Many pieces of their lives are moving in the right direction.

And the two boys needing help walking to middle school?  It turns out the school wasn't at all ready for them and the level of language and literacy help they'll need.  The school hopes to be ready by April 19, and it is possible that we will need walking support that week.  Please let Jamie Buss know if you can offer help.

Meanwhile, here's a list of specific items and services that would be useful.  Please scan the list and see what you can connect with.  Jamie is coordinating the list, so she is the best contact.

Want More to Round Out the Year with Bayard Rustin?

Here's a "Quakerspeak" video with Walter Naegle, Rustin's longtime partner and companion, about the discrimination and prejudice Rustin encountered in the civil rights movement and among Quakers.

Question:  How do I send in a Silent Announcement?
Answer:  Just send an email to: flowerruth@gmail.com+SA.

Update on the Strawberry Festival

Carole Hoage reports for the ad-hoc planning group that it appears we'll be able to have a modified Strawberry Festival on June 4 this year.  Coordinators have come forward for baked goods, white elephants, jewelry, silent auction, and the all-important strawberries. Coordinators are still needed for food, clothing, books, plants, toys, children's on-site games and clean-up. Here is the planning group's full report.  Contact Carole Hoage, Angelyn Flowers, Martha Woods or Ann Marie Moriarty to volunteer or pass along ideas!

Friends Community School

Friends Community School's weekly bulletin is available here.  The school is dealing with a transition to "optional masks" inside, and learning about respecting each other's individual needs. Angela Garcia, head of school, writes "To learn to perceive differences from a place of empathy and understanding rather than skepticism and judgment feels vital in today’s world."

We'll be celebrating FCS's birthday and starting off the next school year with a joint meeting for worship at FCS on September 25.

Wider World of Friends

Baltimore Yearly Meeting and You

Baltimore Yearly Meeting's Weekly Announcements are available here.  There's some partying going on!  A Homecoming at Homewood meeting for their 100th anniversary (April 24), and a picnic sponsored by Young Friends to commemorate Baltimore Yearly Meeting's 350th year (May 7).  The Religious Education folks from several meetings apparently had a fun time at their first consultation on April 2 and are looking forward to another get together on Sunday - this Sunday. And the Quaker Counselors and Pastoral Care folks are getting together for their annual conference beginning April 28.  It's all in there - check it out.

Nuturing Faithfulness

New England Yearly Meeting has worked for years to support Friends in deepening their faith journeys. The  Nuturing Faithfulness program is a part of that effort.  The program begins and ends with an in-person retreat, and is structured to set in place support, encouragement, and accountability.

"Our Quaker tradition is a path that, when lived deeply and faithfully, can have a tremendous transforming and healing effect on the world," the program leaders write. And, "In this program we are led to interrupt oppression and marginalization, especially related to race and class, in our Quaker communities and practices." The two core teachers are  Marcel Martin and Hilary Burgin.

Find out more about the program here, and sign up for an information session on April 25 , 7 - 8 p.m. here. Adelphi Meeting has funds to support participation in conferences such as this. Don't let the cost be a barrier.

A generous heart is always open, always ready to receive our going and coming.  In the midst of such love we need never fear abandonment.  This is the most precious gift true love offers - the experience of knowing we always belong.   ~ bell hooks

Update on the Letter to the Nicaraguan Government

Small action - Big impact

Last month we learned of a letter being circulated among faith groups in the U.S. addressed to the Nicaraguan government about ending the violence that has continued there since 2018. More than 400 people of faith signed that letter.  Twenty-three were Quakers, and 20 of the Quakers were from Adelphi meeting. The open letter was published yesterday in Spanish and English in various Nicaraguan publications and on a local radio station.  It was also sent to the families of political prisoners. The coordinator of the letter-writing project reports that "we have already received some messages from people saying how important it is for them to know that people of faith and good will who don't even know them are holding them in their thoughts and prayers, that they feel accompanied." The coordinators ask that we continue to hold the people of Nicaragua in our prayers and in our hearts.  Here is the letter with the signatures, and here is the press release

Reparations:  How Can We Begin to Make Small Repairs?

The Peace and Social Concerns Committee, Reparations Sub-committee, invites Friends to tell us about a local organization that could be meaningfully supported by $5k less.

In particular, we are looking for local organizations or projects that aid or support Black or Indigenous people and have a focus of deepening the knowledge and understanding of the history of Black or Indigenous people in our region or that support Black or Indigenous people's presence on and use of the lands in our area. Preference will be given to Prince George's County based organizations. Here is survey you can use to introduce us to this organization:  https://forms.gle/kLQtbTbSKYSa87bW8

"Reel and Meal" Film Discussion

The "Reel & Meal" program at the New Deal Cafe will show the film "Rosenwald," at 7:00 pm, on April 18. Julius Rosenwald, a Jewish philanthropist, helped build over 5,300 schools for Black children in the early 20th century–including more than 25 in Prince George’s County alone. After the film, historian Dr. Dennis Doster, will lead the discussion about Maryland African American history.

The screening is live in-person at the Café, 113 Centerway, Greenbelt, or via zoom. Registration for virtual viewing via Zoom is required – please use this link: tinyurl.com/ReelnMealApr18  Additional  information about the film is available at: http://rosenwaldfilm.org, and on this flyer
