From Coach Flory's Desk

The Dogs' Breakfast is back and it’s right around the corner! The tradition that started in 2001, which has become bigger and better each year, is finally back after a two-year absence. We are so excited to be able to celebrate together in person again on Thursday, May 5 at Prairieland Park here in Saskatoon. The Dogs' Breakfast is put on by the Huskie Football Foundation and all the money raised goes towards scholarships for our student-athletes -- a very worthwhile cause, as helping with their education pays dividends for us all.

This year’s breakfast will honour the 2007 Saskatchewan Roughriders Grey Cup Championship. Several members of that team will be here, reminiscing and telling stories, all moderated and emceed by Glen Suitor. Guests include Jeremy O’Day, Tad Kornegay, Andy Fantuz and Scott Schultz. I must extend a huge thank-you to the Roughrider organization, specifically Craig Reynolds, for being so gracious and assisting us with the whole process. Getting all these former players here wouldn’t have been possible without them. We are really looking forward to hearing what they all have to say.

This time of year also means CFL training camps are around the corner, and prior to that is the CFL Draft on Tuesday, May 3. We have several athletes eligible to be selected; primarily look to CFL National Combine invitees Nathan Cherry, Adam Machart, Riley Pickett, and Noah Zerr to hopefully be selected. CFL Western Regional Combine invitees Mason Nyhus and David Solie could have their names called as well (Ed note: read more below on the draft hopefuls). We wish them all the best and support them if given the opportunity to compete at the professional level.

Another good news story is our former Huskie Football patriarch Brian Towriss returning to the sidelines to coach at the U SPORTS East West Bowl on May 7 at McMaster University in Hamilton. BT will be back on familiar ground and I am so proud he’ll be representing our program. None of our current staff can attend due to the conflict with our Spring Camp but fortunately our four competing athletes, Charlie Ringland, Josh Ewanchyna, Daniel Perry and Connor Delahey will be there too and get to be coached by BT. Good luck to BT and the boys. Bring home a win for the West!

Regards,

Scott Flory

Offseason Q&A: Josh Ewanchyna

Over the next few months, we’re catching up with some of the Huskies key players as they reflect on last season and prepare for the next one. First up is running back Josh Ewanchyna.

Huskie Football Alumni: Given some time to reflect, how do you feel about what the team accomplished last year?

Josh Ewanchyna: It was truly something special and it was a run I’ll never forget. That being said, I think the boys really got to see our true potential as and it gave us a good spark going into this offseason.

What is your biggest takeaway from the 2021 season?

My biggest takeaway was the resilience we had through some tough games throughout the season. Especially starting our season off with a loss, we never skipped a beat after that.

How do the 2021 Uteck Bowl and Vanier Cup results impact your preparation for 2022?

Being able to play in those big games is a great experience for our guys which will help us grow on the field for our upcoming season. It shows all of our young guys that we have the potential in the locker room; we just having to be willing to do the work.

In which area(s) do you think you've improved the most as a player since joining the Huskies?

My football IQ has grown immensely. The amount of time spent in the film room and breaking down defences has really taken my game to the next level.

Which elements of your game are you most focused on improving during this off-season?

I’m most focused on working on my speed and knowledge of the game. Speed kills in football and I really think it would help me be the best running back that I can be. And my knowledge of the game can always grow and become more detailed.

What are your goals, both individually and collectively, for 2022?

Personally, I want to be an All-Canadian but nothing would mean more than winning a Vanier Cup with my brothers.

Final CFL Draft rankings

The 2022 Canadian Football League Draft is set to take place on May 3 and a pair of Huskies have cracked the CFL Scouting Bureau’s final Top 20 rankings.

Noah Zerr // OL // Rank: #10

In his fourth year with the Huskies, Zerr anchored an offensive line that paved the way for a rushing attack that led the nation in yards per carry (8.3) and was third in yards per game (193.3), while giving up just five sacks in six conference games.

Nathan Cherry // DL // Rank: #20

One of the leaders of a fearsome Huskies front four, Cherry led the Canada West with 5.5 sacks in 2021 and tied for third with 7.5 tackles for a loss.

Zerr and Cherry could have some company on draft day, too. Other Huskies who may hear their names called include RB Adam Machart, QB Mason Nyhus, DL Riley Pickett & P/K David Solie. Good luck to all of the Huskie prospects!

Be a part of the Starting 24

Starting 24 is simple. By giving a little bit, either monthly or yearly, together we can make a huge difference to give the Huskies the ability to compete each year for the Vanier Cup!

Reoccurring pledges are the best way for you to help us support the team!

  • The Starting 24 is the primary fundraiser for the Huskie football team. There are 24 starting positions on a football team and they each need to execute their job and work together for the team to be successful. The Starting 24 is the same, it requires that we all chip in a little bit to build a successful program.
  • Funds are used to solely benefit the team, either through scholarships or toward operations.
  • All donations are eligible for a tax receipt from the University of Saskatchewan.
  • All-Canadian Level members who are football alumni will also receive their name on the name plate above your former number in the Huskies locker room.

Huskies legend Brian Towriss will coach Team West in the 2022 East-West Bowl.

It's the fifth time BT that will be serving as a head coach at the prospect showcase. Team West has a perfect 4-0 record when he's been on the sidelines.
