URSINUS COLLEGE ALUMNI AWARD
FOR SERVICE TO HUMANITY

On April 23, 2022.Rev. Patsy’s alma mater, Ursinus College, is awarding her with this year’s Alumni Award for service to Humanity. The award recognizes an individual who has exhibited outstanding service to society; it pays tribute for time volunteered for the benefit of a community or non-profit institution. Contributions may have been made at the local, state, national, or international levels.

For Patsy, Ursinus was a place to discover her talents and passions and turn them into the tools of leadership. She was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, where she learned how to explore her spirituality and apply her faith to everyday life. Speech classes at UC helped Patsy find her voice as a confident communicator and storyteller. Patsy proudly served as President of the Phi Alpha Psi sorority, acting as a leader for her house and an advocate for her sisters. Patsy once performed “Singing in the Rain,” with her sorority, an experience that would later help inspire her to write a musical that has been performed in several countries in Africa.

Patsy’s Ursinus education culminated in a teaching degree in 1981. After graduation, she spent several years working in Florida: first as a teacher at Boca Raton Christian School and then as an office manager for the Women’s Tennis Association. In 1985, Patsy married her husband Todd and the pair went to Seminary together. Patsy got her master’s in religion from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Illinois in 1990. Following this, she served in African missions for over 30 years.

In accepting the award, Rev. Patsy offered these words of advice to current and past students at Ursinus:

"Experience the richness of humanity in all cultures and all walks of life. Be people who reach people. Pass on the legacy of love and leadership and make a difference in people's lives. Use your gifts, talents, and passions to the glory of God and the benefit of mankind. Dream big. Be open-minded and blend your faith into society. We all need love--only love."

Bishop Todd and Rev. Patsy were honored by SAMS (Society of Anglican Missionaries and Senders) for their 30 years of missionary service with a gift of a beautiful prayer bowl. The prayer bowl is a means of collecting prayer requests and remembering to pray. Todd continues assisting at SAMS as a mentor and coach for new missionaries.

WELCOME HOME FROM CHAPEL OF ST. ANDREW

Archdeacon Faye Somers, of Chapel of St. Andrew in Boca Raton, presents Bishop Todd with a thanksgiving photo and award for the McGregor’s 30 years of mission service.

The award features a picture of Chapel of St. Andrew, along with an inscription that reads,"Welcome back from 30 years in the mission field. ‘Well done good and faithful servants’"

Reading Together

Rev. Patsy has been busy completing the fourth and final book in her missionary series. Madagascar: The Window of my Soul is coming out late summer or early fall.

But, you don’t have to wait until Fall to read books by Rev. Patsy about the McGregors’ years in Madagascar and Kenya! Her three earlier books are still available! Consider how one church in Illinois dug deeply into these books….

Members of The Annunciation of Our Lady Episcopal Church in Gurnee, Illinois decided to use Rev. Patsy’s books for their on-going Wednesday study group. They started reading Tamana, meeting in person and on Zoom. Each week the group read two chapters from Tamana and facilitator Miriam Berry shared pictures and maps to illuminate their reading. Miriam prepared traditional Malagasy loaka (a type of stew) and the participants ate loaka and pineapple. Rev. Patsy even Zoomed in for one of the discussions, and group members were eager to ask questions.

Upon completing Tamana, the group wanted to know more about Madagascar and the McGregors, so they read A Guest in God’s World that recounts the McGregors’ first 11 years in Madagascar. Again, Miriam Berry emailed pictures and additional information to the group members. They even had a vanilla tasting event as part of the study, and again Rev. Patsy joined one meeting via Zoom.

Next, the group read The Detour, which details the years the McGregor family spent in Kenya. The group drank Kenyan coffee and tea during the study and shared the beverages with the entire congregation during coffee hour. The book group is currently reading Anne Lamott, while eagerly waiting for Rev. Patsy’s next book to come out!

Consider starting a similar study at your parish. All three of her books are available on Amazon and Rev. Patsy would love to join you on Zoom!

Lenten Retreat

Bishop Todd traveled to Geneva, Illinois for a Lenten Retreat at St. Mark's Church. Parishioner Bob Wright reported that Bishop Todd inspired participants to see missions as something we can all be engaged in doing. Talking about the biblical mandate to spread the Gospel, Bishop Todd gave examples or ways we can do that right where we are. We don't have to go overseas--the United States in more diverse than ever, he said. Just go for a walk and meet people, and be available to discuss spirituality when the topic comes up. Be a friend to people. Volunteer for organizations in order to engage with people outside your usual circle. All those in attendance were inspired during the retreat. Bishop Todd also preached participated in services the following day.

Lambeth Bound

Bishop Todd will be in England for the Lambeth Conference this summer, where he plans to meet with bishops from the Indian Ocean, Mozambique, and Tanzania to discern possible partnerships with People Reaching People.

Since 1867, Anglican bishops from around the world have traveled to England to attend the Lambeth Conference. Convened by Justin Welby Archbishop of Canterbury, the 2022 Lambeth Conference, held July 26--August 7, will be the 15th international meeting of Anglican bishops.

The conference theme for 2022 is ‘God’s Church for God’s World - walking, listening and witnessing together.’ The conference will explore what it means for the Anglican Communion to be responsive to the needs of a 21st Century world.

Please keep Bishop Todd in your prayers as he journeys to Lambeth.
