Budget 2022: COVID-19 recovery plan for kids is missing

This year's federal budget includes important investments that will positively impact children and youth including child care and early learning, dental care, pharmacare and housing – but it does not include big, bold investments to address the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on young people in Canada.

Although a pandemic recovery plan for kids is lacking, Children First Canada (CFC) is pleased that several commitments in Budget 2022 support recommendations from the Young Canadians’ Parliament in their recent report, Our Commitment to Today and Tomorrow.

“We are facing a generational catastrophe that requires immediate and sustained support. Children are grappling with massive learning loss, mental and physical health issues, social isolation and many other challenges,” says CFC founder and CEO Sara Austin. “Children are citizens with rights. They represent a quarter of our population and 100% of our future. As Canada rebuilds from the pandemic, there is nothing more critical than investing in our children. When children prosper, Canada prospers.”

In response to Budget 2022, CFC has proposed a roadmap to put children and youth at the heart of Canada’s pandemic recovery plans. Click the button below to read the full statement.

New poll
Canadians want more government spending on kids
A recent national survey found that 85% of Canadians are concerned about the future of children and youth in Canada. The poll also revealed that 76% of respondents said federal spending on children is important, with 29% noting it is "very important."  The findings of the poll, conducted by Maru/Blue for CFC, came on the eve of the second anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic. "Just because we are seeing an easing in COVID-19 restrictions does not mean that the pandemic is behind us,” says CFC founder and CEO Sara Austin. “Kids are still in crisis."

YCP recommendations report is now available!
The Young Canadians' Parliament (YCP) has released a policy recommendations report addressing the issues that matter most to kids and youth. Throughout the pandemic, young people have endured the impacts of systemic discrimination, poverty and mental health. Our Commitment to Today and Tomorrow was developed by four Youth Ambassadors to highlight the various issues raised over the past year by YCP members.

"We hope this is the beginning of establishing a great working relationship between us young people and the government, specifically parliamentarians," says the report.

The YCP is a growing movement of young people who are standing up for their rights and sharing their views with parliamentarians. Click the button below to access the full report.

Children and youth deserve better
In a recent CBC Kids News article, YCP member Jayden Paquet-Noiseux shared why he thinks all 8 million kids in Canada have a right to better mental health. Jayden is a 16-year-old student from Quebec who participated in the YCP's mock debate last month. After creating mock bills at a previous YCP event, youth gathered online in March to debate which ones should become law. Jayden's recommendations are reflected in the YCP's latest report to parliamentarians.
