   Issue  117                     2nd May 2022

We are delighted to share with you our new look website at elderscouncil.org.uk

A small team of Elders Council volunteers and staff collaborated with Tech4Good volunteers, from Accenture Newcastle, to co-develop our new website.
Our aim was to make it easy to use for visitors to the page, and manageable for own staff and volunteers who have to keep it up to date.

You can now become a member of EC online, download our latest magazine and other publications, read about our projects, find out what EC events are taking place and book any of our ticketed events.

What's the Elders Council doing?

EC Board of Trustees

Trustee Board members and staff met this week to discuss and evaluate the work of EC, particularly in light of the world events which have had such a catastrophic effect on older people.
This is the first time in two years that we have met face to face so we classed this as an 'away day' although to be fair we were only in the centre of Newcastle.
The session gave us all an opportunity to consider how we think the EC is doing, how effective we are in the City and what the future challenges are likely to be, pandemic aside!

For information and clarification,
'Charity Trustees are the people who share ultimate responsibility for governing a charity and directing how it is managed and run'.

The Trustee Board is made up of EC members, older people who have volunteered their time and life experiences to the charity.
Our Trustees also represent EC on local and national organisations where views of older people are shared in the interest of all. In order to do this we talk to communities in the City and gather information about topical issues.

Songwriting Workshops 1952-2022
70 Years in Song - Jesmond Festival Event
Wednesday 18th May from 10.30 - 12.30 pm

at Jesmond Library, St George's Terrace, Newcastle NE2 2DL

Join this relaxed, one-off session as a group or individual, led by experienced musician and cultural historian Jude Murphy, to collaboratively create and sing songs drawing on the past 70 years in Jesmond and beyond.
No prior experience of creative writing or songwriting is necessary.
We’ll be using text and visual prompts, group exercises and discussions… and lots of humour along the way!
This workshop is organised by the Elders Council of Newcastle with the Wellbeing for Life team from the Friends of Jesmond Library.
Some of you may remember we celebrated Older People's Day in 2019 by writing new words to old songs which we then sang around Newcastle City Centre, this was good fun and we hope to see you at this new event.

Alphabetti Theatre
‘A Whale of a Time’ on Saturday 28th May at 1.00 pm

Elders Council has been invited to bring a group of people to see this new show.

What’s it about?
Inside the belly of a whale, we meet Albert, a man in his fifties who has been here for half of his life. He has no idea why he's inside a whale, but after 25 years he's pretty much accepted it - this is home.
In washes Robbie, in his twenties and full of beans. They're an unlikely pairing but soon it turns into friendship and conversations on life events that Albert had no idea about... What's Google? Who's Raoul Moat? What the hell is a vegan sausage roll?
Whale Of A Time explores friendship, 'being a man' in different generations, and how one person could change the rest of your life.

The show lasts approximately 75 minutes and for those who wish to stay after the show, Audrey from Alphabetti is offering us a workshop to explore nostalgia and generational empowerment.

There is no set price for the tickets, it’s ‘pay what you feel’.

If you would like to join us, please email info@elderscouncil.org.uk
If you can’t come on that day but would still like to see the show, go to www.alphabettitheatre.co.uk for details of other performances.

Muscle Health and Activity Monitoring

The aim of this study is to investigate the application of smart socks to measure muscle health during walking in healthy older adults. As people become older, the amount of muscle mass and muscle strength usually decreases. This may contribute to difficulty in walking and balance problems.
If you are over the age of 65 and interested in taking part in this research study, then contact the researchers below.
