"Something’s Different" - Concepts of Change in Adults with I/DD
Featured in the 2020/2021 START National Online Training Series
Something's Different: Concepts of Change in Adults with ID
Presenter: Julie A Moran, DO, Geriatrician/Internist, Clinical lecturer of Medicine, Harvard Medical School

The topic of aging presents important considerations that may often be overlooked or not well understood. Dr. Moran’s presentation helps us explore the various changes that occur as a function of growing older. This change may be experienced physically, cognitively, functionally, behaviorally, or in various combinations of all of these factors. Dr. Moran helps us to learn a framework of how to properly evaluate change in an aging adult with an intellectual disability, taking into account all potential contributing factors to the changes described.
Autism Acceptance Month
As we continue our focus on Autism Acceptance Month, NCSS Research and Training Associate Melanie Hecker, MPA, provides a review of the new Amazon Original Series: As We See It from her lived experience perspective.

"This authentic representation of life as an autistic young adult is a great way to kick off April."

CLC Tip
“Developing cultural competence is a dynamic and complex process requiring ongoing self-assessment and continuous expansion of one’s cultural knowledge. It evolves over time, beginning with an understanding of one’s own culture, continuing through interactions with individuals from various cultures, and extending through one’s own expansion of knowledge.”

Use this activity in your next team meeting as an opportunity to build community & develop your cultural competence:

Cultural Connections

Instructions:
  • Break into small groups (ex: groups of 4-5)
  • Take turns sharing (ex: each person shares for 2 minutes; the round is 10 minutes total)
  • Prompts are just suggestions! Share whatever you’d like.
  • Large Group Report Out: 1 person from each group shares both cultural connections & discoveries from their small group
 Prompts to get you started:
  • What were some birthday traditions in your family growing up? What was important to you as a child about birthdays?  Do you still keep up those traditions?
  • How and when does your family celebrate the new year?
  • What tradition do you have around new babies?  How do you celebrate the coming of a new baby?  What do you do for the arrival?  Anything within the first year?
  • What was a food served in your family growing up that you really didn’t like?
  • If you wanted to serve a visitor a meal that would help them to understand your cultural heritage, what meal would you serve?
