New Quaker Speak Video:
Looking at the Legacy of Bayard Rustin
With Walter Naegle, NYYM Administrative Associate

As a gay African-American, civil rights activist Bayard Rustin faced discrimination his entire life—sometimes, Walter Naegle reminds us, among his fellow Friends. Walter, Rustin’s partner and companion in his final decades, discusses his vital contributions to Quaker testimony of peace, integrity and equality.

“Bayard believed in the oneness of the human family, in the brotherhood and sisterhood of all people,” Walter says. “He believed in the power of nonviolence which comes out of that belief in the oneness of all people.… He saw everybody as equal in the eyes of the divine.” Watch the video here.

NYC Quakers Needed for Gay Pride Parade Committee
The New York Quarterly Meeting is looking for Friends to serve on the Gay Pride Parade Coordinators Committee. The parade is on Sunday, June 26, 2022. Quakers have been participating in Gay Pride since its inception in 1970. When we pass the main stand, we always get mentioned and it would, therefore, be embarrassing if we break this wonderful tradition this year.

Friends willing to participate in organizing this event for NYQM need to make sure we register with the current Gay Pride Parade organization. Otherwise we would not get an assigned slot in the parade or get mentioned as we pass the podium. Other things we might need are flags and banners. If you are interested, please contact Paul van Linden Tol at parcvlt@gmail.com.

April Quaker Changemaker Event

War is Not the Answer in Yemen
April 20, 2022, 6:30-7:30 p.m. EDT, ONLINE
FCNL and anti-war activists have advocated against the Saudi-led blockade and war on Yemen since it began seven years ago. With critical support from the United States, the Saudi-led coalition’s war and blockade have helped create the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, pushing over 16 million people to the brink of famine in Yemen. At April’s Quaker Changemaker event, we’ll attempt to understand the war in Yemen from different advocacy angles—from the perspective of Capitol Hill, of local activists, and of FCNL’s Advocacy Teams who are focusing on this issue. We will invite you to consider how your commitment to peace might lead you to act on the human crisis in Yemen. Join us to learn how FCNL and F/friends are advocating to end the Saudi-led blockade and war on Yemen. FCNL’s Legislative Director for Middle East Policy Hassan El-Tayyab and local Yemeni activist Iman Saleh will discuss their advocacy. FCNL’s Sarah Freeman-Woolpert will moderate the conversation.

What's Going on in AFSC?
A conversation among NYYM Friends

April 26, 7-8:30 p.m.

Hans-Jurgen Lehmann and Lisa Gasstrom, NYYM's appointed Representatives to the AFSC (American Friends Service Committee) Corporation, would like Friends to know that important matters including the reorganization of AFSC will be coming up at the annual AFSC Corporation meeting 4/9-4/10. These matters have prompted some corporation members to ask whether the AFSC may thereby jeopardize its vital connections with its communities. Interested Friends can be in touch with either Lisa or Hans with concerns or questions. A Zoom conversation will take place April 26, 7-8:30 p.m. among NYYM Friends who are involved with or interested in AFSC following the Corporation meeting. To RSVP for that conversation, please fill out this brief form

Powell House logoA Powell House Virtual Workshop:
Being Community: Friends & Neurodiversity
April 30, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

How do we welcome differences in how our own and others’ minds work? How do we relate to these differences as that of God? For those of us who identify or have been identified as neuro-divergent and our clinicians, educators, caregivers, families, and friends, how can silence, waiting on God, listening for the still, small voice within, the commitment to equity and inclusion, and other Quaker values and practices guide us toward a bigger vision for our lives and work? This workshop will explore the above queries first through a talk drawn from Heidi Wexler's experiences as a speech language pathologist and neuro-divergent parent to a neuro-divergent child. Following the talk, there will be opportunities for silence, sharing, and questions. Register here.

Editor's NoteClose up of a white daffodil with an orange center.
This weekend holds the beginning of Passover, the middle of Ramadan, and Easter, a confluence of religious holidays that only happens every 33 years or so. I grew up with a secular (candy-focused) celebration of Easter but as an adult I've come to feel that Easter is a time to acknowledge rebirth, renewal, and miracles. Spring has sprung. I hope that, whatever you celebrate, this weekend brings you some joy and time to be together with other people.
