UConn 4-H Pick up Authorization Form

A Pick-up Authorization form has been recently uploaded onto the UConn 4-H Forms' page. Parents/Guardians can give their child who is a  4-H youth member permission to sign themselves out of a meeting or indicate that only (a) designated person/people can sign-out and transport their 4-Her.
This form should be filled out once per year for your club meetings and can be reviewed and updated during the year as needed.

UConn 4-H COVID-19 Guidelines
Updated 3.25.22

With the updated UConn guidelines, masking is no longer required for 4-H activities. UConn 4-H activities that are hosted in spaces other than UConn property should follow the guidelines of the host facility.  Any 4-H activities occurring on UConn property or in a UConn office must adhere to current UConn guidelines.

Please remember that masking is still recommended.  We also strongly encourage each member of the UConn community to continue to be flexible and courteous when it comes to masking.  Members of the community will be at varying stages of comfort with mask wearing and we want to be respectful of others.

HIGHLY PATHOGENIC AVIAN INFLUENZA CONFIRMED IN BIRDS

Owners of birds should avoid visiting other farms, homes or facilities that also have birds. Please keeps this in mind when planning 4-H club activities. USDA has confirmed Avian Influenza in Connecticut.
USDA APHIS has confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) across the country. Anyone involved with poultry – commercial or backyard flocks alike – should review their biosecurity plan and enhance their biosecurity practices to assure the health of their birds.

Avian influenza (AI) is caused by an influenza type A virus which can infect poultry (such as chickens, turkeys, pheasants, quail, domestic ducks, geese, and guinea fowl) and is carried by free flying waterfowl. As part of our efforts to prevent the introduction of Avian Influenza into Connecticut poultry, the department conducts surveillance testing of birds throughout the state. Commercial and non-commercial flock owners are participating in our surveillance program. We have partnered with the Connecticut Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Connecticut to do low or no cost testing of birds for the Avian Influenza virus. We also have strict importation restrictions to prevent the spread of the virus in our state.

Bird owners need to be aware and report anything out of the ordinary. Anyone who may suspect a poultry on their farm may have died from unknown causes should call the State Veterinarian at 860-713-2505 or email ctstate.vet@ct.gov. Signs of Avian Influenza include depression, decreased feed and water consumption, decreased egg production, soft or misshapen eggs, and respiratory signs (coughing and sneezing). You can also find out more by visiting the Connecticut Department of Public Health's pandemic flu webpage or visit the USDA’s Bird Flu website.

New USDA APHIS Webpage Displays Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Information and Map

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is announcing the availability of a new webpage that displays the latest data and information about cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) confirmed in commercial and backyard flocks in the United States.  This is the same data APHIS has previously made available about HPAI in the United States, but in a new format that is more visual and easier to navigate.

The new page displays high-level information about the outbreak including the number of confirmed flocks, affected states, and total birds affected.  Visitors to the page may view a map of birds affected by state and can change the map to view total flocks affected by state, or commercial or backyard flocks by state.  A new feature in the data table on the page allows users to see when control areas and surveillance zones have been released for affected counties.

APHIS will continue to announce the first case of HPAI in commercial and backyard flocks detected in a State but will not announce subsequent detections in the State. All cases in commercial and backyard flocks will be listed on this new page, which will be updated by noon Eastern each weekday.

APHIS continues to urge all bird owners to practice good biosecurity, prevent contact between their birds and wild birds, and report sick birds or unusual bird deaths to State/Federal officials, either through their state veterinarian or through APHIS’ toll-free number at 1-866-536-7593. APHIS urges producers to consider bringing birds indoors when possible to further prevent exposures. Additional information on biosecurity for backyard flocks can be found at http://healthybirds.aphis.usda.gov.
