Planners Report

The 4th event of the year was held in Noordhoek, starting off at the Rugby/Football club and venturing off into the commons/wetlands before a loop on the Dockers farm and some more sandy fun to finish.  With some relatively last-minute (standard procedure) map extensions and some discovering of some fun new terrain, the courses started moving away from sprint and more into colour-coded territory.  It's always a bit tricky planning courses that will suit both the more experienced fitter crowd as well as the newer-bees and the longer-in-the-tooth ;) so I do apologise if some sections were a bit on the rougher side.  (I did try plan it that there was always a pretty vegetation free route, but that did require some spot on navigation).

The day itself turned out to be rather stunning (if not a little warm), and we had a really great turnout with 75 starts (of which 36 were teams) and over 100 runners.  A really nice mixture of families, newbies, old hands and racing snakes!

British orienteer Doug Tullie dominated the Long course finishing in a little under 45min, followed 9 min later by Roark Robinson (who had some fun in some holes ;) ) and Mark Vernon a further 7min back.  Sarah Wimberley (5th overall) took the honours for the women ahead of Sarah Everett and Jacori UysTeam Rafikis was the 1st team across the line in 4th overall with newbie Warren Black joining Kilian Schabort.  Behind them were Team Hockman/Sloan and Team Dinki.

In the short course Oliver James took the win ahead of Nic Laidler and Rebecca Harding (and co for half of it).  The Wacky Wheelers and Alice+Paige rounded of the team podium in 4th and 5th overall.

Thanks have to go to Roland for controlling and general admin as well as the usual registration and behind the scenes crew. Thanks also to the Dockers+tenants for use of their farm and the rugby/football club for the use of the clubhouse!

Hope to see you all at the festival races end of the month!  Some awesome new maps from international mapper Victor Dobretsov and some really cool areas should make for some great orienteering!

Next Events - Western Cape Orienteering Festival!

Three days of excellent orienteering on three brand new maps covering two brand new areas, all taking place on the long weekend from Sat 30 April - Mon 02 May.

The festival center is in Stellenbosch and takes in the wonderful Eden Forest before heading to a remapped and extended Coetzenberg.  The grand finale is the SA Sprint Championships at Helderberg Farm in Somerset West - which promises a thoroughly challenging and enjoyable end to a memorable weekend.  Although each day is a stand-alone event and you are welcome to enter just one or two of the races, we would obviously encourage you to make the most of these wonderful venues and sign up for them all.

Finally, for those travelling from near and far, we have arranged accommodation on the doorstep of Eden Forest at the Christian Brothers Center.  We plan to have an informal braai on the Sunday evening, so make sure you book your space as accommodation is limited.

Links to both the Event Bulletin and the CBC accommodation details are below, so check them out.  Alternatively, click here to see all details on our EntryNinja pages.
