Welcome to the Oregon Region's
April 2022 Newsletter!

Hello Oregon Region!

Congratulations to everyone who took part in our 2022 qualifying Quiz Rally, held in beautiful Sisters! We hosted 13 teams from all over the region and I loved watching the teamwork and collaboration that happened. Here are the results:

Thank you to our RIC, Amy McCaffrey, HMO, Adria Fix, and UL Coordinator Kirin Nelson for organizing our first Regional Clinic on the weekend of April 16/17. Fingers crossed for good weather. Details can be found on the Region’s Website (see below)

Our qualifying Dressage Rally is being held at Devonwood on the weekend of May 13-15 and the invitation and entry form are on the Region’s website. Please remember that it is the DC/CA’s role to enter teams/catch riders, so speak with your club or center leader if you are interested in attending this rally.

Championships East (Tryon EC, NC, July 27-31)
and West (Twin Rivers Ranch, CA July 1-8)

As you know, this year there is an opportunity to enter Championships a little closer to home as West Coast Champs are being held in Paso Robles, CA from July 1 - 8. I did want you to be aware of two opportunities that do not require qualifying at a regional rally - USPC is holding an invitational event in Gymkhana and Western Trail.  All the information is on the USPC website, please look there if you have questions - if you STILL have questions, feel free to reach out to me or Elena Frank (Champs coordinator) at oregonregionboard@gmail.com

Daniel Stewart Clinic
Hosted by Iron Horse Riding Center
July 2nd - 3rd
West Linn, OR
$375 for the weekends (includes stall)

Iron Horse Riding Center is once again hosting Daniel Stewart this summer! His clinic is designed to help riders perform better under pressure with a super fun and creative but very challenging set of courses. 12 riders will be guided through learning to ride past mistakes and truly enjoy the moments of success and roll past the mistakes. Even if you feel like you already ride well under pressure, there is nothing quite like this clinic! The afternoon sections will be a Sports Psychology and Fitness Boot Camp that riders AND auditors get to participate in. Groups based on confidence, not height of jumps Email us at IronHorsePonyClub@gmail.com for the registration form. Auditors welcome! Watch and learn from the morning riding sessions and participate in the afternoon seminars. $25 per day or $40 for both. Email us to sign up as an auditor. Pony Clubs and Barns bringing groups are eligible for a discount (have your Trainer/DC/CA email us the group list!)

Horse Management

~ Adria Fix, Regional HMO ~

Dressage Rally is just around the corner! With that comes the scramble to get your Required Equipment List ready and to have meetings for new members about the unique experience that a Rally is. For any new leadership or entire clubs/centers, I would like to offer my help or a local instructor's to help your teams prepare for Rally. What to expect with the general flow of a rally, what do you need to pack outside the REL, tips and tricks to setting up a functional and fun Tackroom and Feed Room, what the role of the AHMJs are for the Chief, and more.

FOR PARENTS/ADULTS: I will be holding an Assistant Horse Management Judge (AHMJ) Training at the UL Clinic & Regional Lesson on April 16th/17th at Iron Horse Riding Academy. I can also include that training at a Club/Center meeting for Rally Prep if you are holding one. The position is a lot less scary than it sounds! You do not actually judge anyone yourself, you are the eyes and ears for the Chief and also to ensure safety is a priority for everyone in the barn. Even if you never plan to be a AHMJ at a Rally, the training will give you a detailed look about what is happening in the barn and how the HM part of Rally gets judged. It can all be a bit of a mystery since only the officials are allowed int he barn! I will be holding a specific meeting for AHMJs that do sign up for Dressage Rally, it will be over Zoom.

If you have ANY HM questions from your Club/Center or need help with ideas for your HM Meetings, please don't hesitate to reach out! It's best to Email me at IronHorseEventing@gmail.com and follow up in a few days if I haven't gotten back to you yet!

CLUB NEWS

Fox Hills PC:  Our club has been having mounted meetings instructed by Anna Collier and Rebecca
Buehler, and monthly unmounted meetings taught by Cat and Mylo Ritson, with help from Paige
Weaver and Leah Stubbs. We would like to welcome two new members, Ava with her horse Bodhi and
Emma with her mare Lilly. During the last unmounted meeting we talked about how to lunge horses safely and effectively. During the mounted meeting, Rebecca did a game after the lessons and had the students attempt to go through the different gaits and even a jump while keeping their egg in a spoon. Courtney impressed us
all by completing an entire course with her egg still in the spoon!

Pictured below is Amber on her gelding Oberon, and a shot from Rebecca’s lesson for Courtney,
Samantha, and Leah.

Highland Riders PC:  It was a full month for HRPC! We sent five members to Quiz Rally and are super proud of our Junior-D team's 1st place finish! We also hosted our annual Dressage Schooling Show fundraiser. Thank-you to everyone who came out to support us! We will be using the funds raised to send our members to regional events. We also had both mounted and unmounted lessons. Our junior pony clubbers were very excited to earn their first badge for learning pony colors, markings, and parts. We also had two members attend the "Tips for Certification" success clinic hosted by Rose City Pony Club. They both came away feeling motivated and better prepared for their next certification. Several of our members are looking forward to attending the regional clinic at Iron Horse and Dressage Rally.

Oregon Trail PC: Happy Spring to everyone in the Oregon Region from Oregon Trail Pony Club (OTPC)! We sent three teams to Quiz Rally in March and everyone had a wonderful time, enjoyed meeting members from across the region, and learned a ton! Congratulations to OTPC’s Junior C, Senior D, and Junior D teams for their 2nd place finishes, and to OTPC’s second Junior C team for their 3rd place finish! Woohoo! A round of applause for Caroline (Caro) Comer and Michele Stevens for their individual championships! Congratulations to each and every one! April has already and will offer multiple opportunities to connect! Our Junior Badge Program kick-off event focused on horse markings and pony parts, jog outs, and rider presentation and grooming for an “exceeds standards” turnout / inspection at rally! Our C-level members employed a variety of teaching techniques and activities and did a fantastic job engaging our D members and non-members! In preparation for Dressage Rally, our monthly core riding lesson focused on riding in the open on hills to engage the hind end and build muscle, and using curved cavalettis in the arena to practice bend, picking up those feet, and achieving those awe-inspiring moments when the horse lifts their back up and is in suspension! Ahh! What fun to ride and such fun to watch! For our first outing together in quite some time, we have planned a visit to a local veterinarian practice at the end of the month to learn about equine first aid! We look forward to sharing more about that outing and experience in next month’s update!

Powell Valley Pony Club: PVPC is preparing for rallies and summer season by learning about trailer safety, led by club member Joan Evan. We also toured the beautiful newly-named Trinity Farms boarding facility located in SW Beaverton, recently under ownership of our club member Annette Gaske. April brings a virtual seminar on Biosecurity and a Rally Kit demonstration! In early April, we were delighted to welcome back Dana Bivens for an eventing clinic retreat to Tulip Springs Farms! While we made it through serious wind gusts, cold temps, hail and snow, every minute was a super experience for D1 to C2 riders to get on course. The riders and ponies were so happy to be out doing dressage tests, grids, show jump and XC, all succeeded at achieving at least one new goal and looking forward to upcoming 1-days and Horse Trials.

Your Regional Board

OregonRegionBoard@gmail.com

Regional Supervisor ~ Annie Winter
Annie was born in Wales and moved to Yorkshire, England when she was 12 yrs old, where she was a member of the Wentworth Pony Club. She received her B certification on her Connemara pony, Toppy. Annie resides in Sisters, OR with her husband David and their youngest, Chloe, who is a senior in high school. Daughters Sophie and Molly are both attending UO and all three girls had wonderful experiences with High Lakes Pony Club, attending many rallies, summer camps, and club lessons. The family has four horses, three dogs, two cats, and Spartacus the Rabbit. Annie was DC of High Lakes PC for eight years and has served on the Regional Board for many years as both RS and Vice-RS.

Vice- RS of Rallies and Volunteers ~ Courtney Lewis
Courtney has been the unmounted educational coordinator for Oregon Trail Pony Club since 2020 and now serving as the Secretary for their club.  She has 2 daughters, Lucy and Janie.  Lucy has been in Pony Club for 3 years and has her C1 in Eventing and Janie just recently joined Pony Club in October and has her D1 certification.  Courtney grew up competing in Eventing, Dressage and then Hunter/Jumpers as an adult and now enjoys watching her daughters ride and compete.

Vice RS - Community ~ Elizabeth Larson
Hi! I’m Elizabeth Larson. I’ve been a part of the Oregon Region for just over a decade. I grew up in Bend, OR with the High Lakes Pony Club. For the past four years, I attended Willamette University in Salem. I became a Patton Valley member and attained my H-A and C-3 certifications while in college. Now I’m back in Bend working in biomanufacturing R&D. In regards to Pony Club, I’m interested in building community inclusiveness and increasing access to education. I believe that warmth, kindness and teamwork are essential to quality leadership.

Horse Management Organizer ~ Adria Fix
Adria has been involved with horses for 30 years, teaching for 13 years, running a program for 11 years and most recently having a Pony Club Riding Center for the past 5 years. She started with Eventing in middle school and continued through High School. During College she rode on her college's IHSA team making it to Zone's in her senior year. After college, she bought her very first horse herself (Bren) and continued in eventing and eventually landing a teaching and managing job at a barn. She started a Pony Club Riding Center as a way to bring the Horsemanship and Management side of horses to her students who did not own horses. It has turned into one of the best decisions for her program. She is looking forward to helping all Centers and Clubs bring the best HM possible to their members.

Treasurer ~ Kara Warner
Kara is a member of Iron Horse Riding Center in West Linn. She lives on small acreage in Sherwood with her husband, two kids, two horses, and other assorted farm animal friends. In her professional life, Kara has a doctorate in environmental toxicology and works for a global environmental and engineering services firm. As an adult member of Pony Club, Kara has learned a TON and is excited to return the favor by serving on the ORUSPC Board as treasurer.

Regional Instructional Coordinator ~ Amy McCaffrey
Amy joined Pony Club in 2016 as an ACA with the startup of the first Pony Club Riding Center in Oregon. She and Adria Fix had a vision for their separate riding schools to bring all the knowledge of Pony Club to their students. As a child in the 70s and onward, Pony Club was not readily available in her area, but she always wished to join after reading about it in magazines and Thelwell books. She began hunter/jumper riding lessons in 2nd grade at Quiet Valley Farm after her mom caught her constantly sneaking thru the fence at her grandparents' little farm trying to climb on the neighbors' equines. She was fortunate to have an instructor who taught the Pony Club way and didn't limit all the instruction to only hunter/jumpers but provided an extremely varied experience in different English riding disciplines. Amy graduated from Beaverton High School, attended Univ. of Portland with a BA in History and was a member of Phi Alpha Theta. Following in her father's footsteps, she graduated from Lewis & Clark Law School. Practicing law showed her that sitting behind a desk did not satisfy her ADHD-outdoorsy lifestyle. After helping manage a H/J program part-time while practicing law, she decided to trade her legal hat for a helmet and open her own riding school in 2015, and has never looked back.

Secretary ~ Anna Hohl
Anna joined the Regional Board in 2020 and has been involved with Pony Club since 2018. She is also the DC of Highland Riders Pony Club, where her daughters, Madeline and Evelyn, are members.  Anna has fond memories of growing up riding horses, but now lives vicariously through her two horse-crazy daughters.
