The Waikanae Jobs for Nature project is an ambitious multi-year effort to restore the Waikanae River catchment in collaboration with the Department of Conservation and Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai (ĀKW). It aims to build capacity and employment within ĀKW and the Kāpiti community and to achieve environmental integrity by implementing the six key kaupapa of Whakapapa, Wairua, Mana, Māramatanga, Te Ao Tūroa, and Mauri.

We see this programme as a steppingstone to enhance Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai (ĀKW) as Kaitiaki within our iwi rohe. A vision of the project is to develop teams that can work across the rohe, helping to restore the awa, the ngahere, and ngā tamariki a Tāne that reside within.

The redevelopment of Mahara Gallery has created an opportunity for a temporary mural on a ramp walkway around the construction site for ten months until the building work is completed.

Expressions of interest were called for in March and the art collective, Kapiti Art Studio, have been selected to paint the mural.

Their co-ordinator, artist Rebecca Bond describes their kaupapa and the concept they have proposed as follows.

Rebecca writes, ‘It is super cool that the painting of a temporary mural on the ramp outside the new Mahara Gallery build is done by Kāpiti Art Studio as it is congruent with our studio ethos - Kāpiti Art Studio is an accessible, creative space where people who face participation barriers to the arts can express themselves creatively and connect with others in the wider community … The outside of the ramp will be painted with flax, flowers, Kowhai and native birds. This represents Waikanae with its rich native bird, native tree and garden life in the area. …The artists particularly wanted the inside of the ramp to reflect water (the sea, wetlands and river) with each side being a reflection of the other because of the glass-like reflections often seen in the area. They wanted to use the koru to represent the water, life, us and the new gallery build’.

Indicative sketch images are attached. Some of the 40 artists in the group will work on stencils in their studio while others will work on-site and engage with the community while they work.

Resene Paints have kindly offered to sponsor paint supplies and Kapiti Coast District Council is offering an artist's fee, and providing overall management of the project in collaboration with Mahara Gallery and Kapiti Art Studio.

We would appreciate your feedback on the proposed artwork and a letter of support for it to proceed please.
