Dear Neighbour,
It has been another busy month both on the North Shore and in Victoria. The Spring sitting of the Legislature has brought many announcements. This email shares a few of them.

Capilano University housing announced

On-campus housing is coming to CapU! 362 much needed beds and a 250 seat dining room has been approved for the University. This will be the first on-campus housing built on this university. The Province will provide over $40 million in funding. Capilano University will provide the remaining $16.7 million. Construction should start early 2023, with an anticipated completion late 2024.

This will provide housing for first and second year students at the university, and will help ease the demand for market housing in the North Shore. When it is completed, Indigenous students with have priority access. The first two floors will be common spaces, dining room, laundry and a First Nations-focused reflection and gathering space. As well, 12 of the units will accessible. For more information on the announcement, click here

BC is investing $12 million towards helping internationally trained nurses get their licences in BC

There are lots of well-trained and highly skilled nurses that want to work in BC but find it difficult to do so due to the costs associated with getting a license.  As well, BC has a nursing shortage, with more and more nurses facing burnout. The Province is working to correct that imbalance by assisting internationally educated nurses in getting registered and licensed in BC faster. $12 million has been allocated to provide help through such things as bursaries to help offset costs associated with the licensing process, and to help with the recruitment of new nurses. These are all good things that help towards bringing much needed nurses to BC

B.C. expands cancer coverage for firefighters

Three types of cancer are being added to BC's existing list of 13 cancers frequently suffered by firefighters that are deemed to be work-related and thereby covered by workers’ compensation. Firefighting is dangerous work, and those that protect us should not have to fight to get protection and support.

2022 Investment Plan and Transport 2050: 10-Year Priorities

There has been a lot of talk regarding traffic and transit. Translink has come out with their latest investment plan, as well as their priorities for the next 10 years. Click here and you can find information and the survey. It is available till May 4th. There are some interesting proposals and improvements suggested for the North Shore.

The Lions Gate bridge will be fully closed to traffic at various times this weekend.

Lions Gate bridge will be fully closed to traffic on Friday, April 29th, between 10 PM and 8 AM, and Saturday, April 30th, and Sunday, May 1st between 8 PM and 5 AM. The only exceptions will be for emergency vehicles and some buses. This will allow crews to finish work on the counterflow lanes and test the equipment. The east sidewalk however, will remain open for cyclists and pedestrians.

Welcoming Ukraine

Many of us have been watching the events unfolding in Ukraine. Ukrainians who are escaping unimaginable violence are now arriving in BC and we are making sure that they receive the vital medical services and community support they need.

As people from the Ukraine arrive in our communities, we understand that access to healthcare is important. Instead of the typical three-month waiting period for new arrivals, we are providing day-of-arrival MSP coverage for Ukrainians entering BC.

We have also expanded the Service BC phone line to include BC211 service, a multilingual service that connects people to more than 15,000 free social and programs throughout the province.

We have also expanded access to free employment services and supports available through over 100 WorkBC Centres, including skills training, employment counselling and access to our job board.

And, to help to ease the transition for families and students, we have encouraged school districts to enroll K-12 students from Ukraine and to waive additional fees they might have for extracurricular activities, such as music or soccer camps. These are just some of the ways that we are supporting newly arrived Ukrainians to feel safe, supported, and connected as they navigate this challenging time.

Because of Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, the Government of Canada has accelerated a temporary residence pathway to allow Ukrainians to stay and to work in Canada. We are committed to working with our partners, including the federal government, to ensure that those fleeing conflict are welcomed to BC as efficiently as possible. More information regarding how BC is welcoming people from Ukraine is available here

And as always, if you have questions or need any assistance with provincial supports, or have questions about any other provincial issue, please reach out. My office can be contacted at 604-983-9859 or by emailing us at susie.chant.mla@leg.bc.ca. We look forward to assisting you.
Susie
I will be at the Parkgate Library next on Tuesday May 24th from 10:00 AM to 11 AM and at the Lynn Valley Library on Tuesday, May 24th from 7:00 PM to 8 PM. I would love to see you. It is an informal time, and you can come and ask me anything. Well maybe not anything, but we can discuss your concerns about provincial matters. Please stop by.

Have your say in what should stay!

The Province is proposing a new regulation to reduce single-use and plastic waste by limiting or banning the use of certain single-use items. From now till June 21st, 2022, the Province is asking people for their input on how we should tackle the problem of plastic waste. Click here for the survey.

Make your emergency plan before you need one!

No one wants to ever have to use one, but as the past has shown us, sometimes they are needed. For help making one, click here. You will find help and information for making an emergency plan.

Protecting our Watershed

Healthy watersheds mean a healthy future for British Columbians. By mitigating the impacts of climate change on communities, strengthening ecosystems and securing clean drinking water, we help protect ourselves, our environment, and our future generations. This is why our government has committed $30 million to protecting and improving our watershed. Find out more here

Arthanks

Earlier in the pandemic, a group of artists wanted to say thank you to all the front-line workers and they came up with the idea of Arthanks. Through Arthanks, artists donate pieces of their work to be given to COVID-19 front-line workers. For more information regarding this group, go to Arthanks where you can also see the available art. You can also drop by anytime we are open and check out the works that we have in person. They have been a pleasure for us to look at and we will miss them, but the art is to go to the front-line workers as a thank you!
