Let's Talk About Skater Skill Levels
Things have changed a lot since 2019, and many folks are just getting back into the swing of competition level roller derby. Maybe by summer everyone will be back to pre-pandemic shape, but just in case **everyone** isn't, please brush up on our updated SKILL LEVELS and open scrimmage advice to make sure we're all on the same page.
STEM Game & Events News

Are you a STEM professional or student who plays, officiates or supports roller derby? Well, have we got some fun lined up for you! Keep your Saturday free, because the activities start at 11am. Join our RollerCon STEM Family fb group to get involved. And there may still be SPACE on the roster, join us and SEA (puns welcome).
Officiating at RollerCon
Officials come from all over the world to practice, learn, teach, mentor, bond and celebrate at RollerCon. But RollerCon is so much more than a typical derby event – more skating, more skaters, more scrimmages, more challenges, bouts, skating events and tons of off skates classes and fun stretching all day and night, including opportunities for experience and evaluations in multiple rulesets. It’s an Official’s dream – and a bit of an administrative puzzle, as well. Here are some links to help you get (re)started:
Training Camp Coaching and Seminars
RollerCon attendees LOVE our training camp MVP classes and open seminar structure. But that's all about YOU. Our community is peer-led at every level and RollerCon is no different. You know how to do something awesome and someone is looking to learn it. So maybe you can teach it.

Our on skates training camp sessions are led by the VERY best of derby coaches. But how do you think they got that way? Or how people found out that they were the best? For many of them, it happened at RollerCon.
Anyone can submit on and off skates sessions at RollerCon. Our scheduler tends to book new coaches lightly, while seasoned coaches carry the most popular camp hours. We ask our attendees for loads of feedback, and we share it with our coaches, so they can hone their skills, too. Coach development is as important as student learning at RollerCon, and feedback gets us there.
Our seminars are less curated and more casual, but just as important. Any attendee can submit seminar sessions, mainly because with such an awesome, diverse and wide-ranging community, chances are that if you want to lead a session, some people out there are also going to want to attend it. We have the space! We've had popular sessions that range from the business of derby (like accounting, managing & recruiting volunteers, administration, marketing, how-to sessions for coaches, announcers, officials, etc) to the fun of it. We host off skates athletics sessions including yoga, cross training, dancing and more. Attendees have appreciated very serious panel sessions on racism in our community, but also roundtables for groups to find each other and talk about serious and silly things; Meditation and nap sessions, make up tutorials, role-playing game nights, poetry roundtables, K-pop dance classes, AA meetings... and a church session on Sunday morning. If you want to host it, let's schedule it!

Class scheduling starts very soon.

SKATE PARK NEWS
The 2022 RollerCon Skate Park is doubling - that's right, TWO skate parks! We're expanding, creating a learner park in the MVP classrooms, and opening up the main park for open session most of the time! The Triple 8 Learner MVP Skatepark will be all classes all day long. The 187 Killer Pads Open Session Skate park will have a few demos  (so you can see some of your favorites skating), but the vast majority of the time, that skatepark will be open session in 2022!
In other exciting skatepark news, we're super thrilled to welcome Keen Ramps to the RC 187 Killer Pads Open Skate Park and Triple 8 MVP Learner Skate Park party! Keen is going to join the open skatepark with Keen Ramps Corner, featuring rails, boxes and more stuff you can buy to skate at home!
Powell Peralta generously supplied 16 complete skateboards so that RollerCon attendees can try out skateboarding in our T8 MVP learner skate park!
Hey Party People!
RollerCon parties are hitting next level in 2022! We're working on hugely expanded theme rink skates and dance skating fun for even more opportunities to have fun on 8 wheels! Look for your favorite DJs spinning the best while you show off all the dance moves our coaches are going to lay on you... on and off the skating rink, in and out of the pool!
Our favorite party news is that we are going to have some rink parties that are gear-optional this year! We still can't combine drinking and skating (and probably never will). But we don't have to make you wear a helmet to have a good time skating and bopping to music during non-contact rec events.

COVID-19 Policy & Info
As of December 2021, Covid is still with us, and no one knows how things will be this summer, so it's super important that everyone understands our covid policies. Please make sure you understand and agree to our covid policy before purchasing a pass. These policies may change by July; we'll make sure they are clear. Hopefully covid will be gone and we won't need a policy! But if we do, expect all policies to be 100% enforced.

Hotel Policy
Hotel staff is 100% vaccinated. Westgate supports and enforces Nevada's indoor mask mandate, which requires that everyone, including fully vaccinated people, wear a mask that covers their nose and mouth in public indoor settings.

RollerCon Policy
Proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 status is required to attend RollerCon.  All attendees must show a CDC vaccination card or QR enabled vaccination record. Unvaccinated people must show negative COVID PCR test results taken no earlier than 48 hours or a negative rapid antigen test record from no earlier than 24 hours prior to entry to RollerCon private conference areas. Tests must have been administered by a medical provider or official testing center; home testing kits will not be accepted for entry. Photo ID and RollerCon badge must accompany presentation of test results or vaccination card. Masks are required indoors, and recommended but not required outdoors.

Enforcement
Expect the Covid policy enforcement to be like our pads and helmet policy has always been. This isn't BS. We are going to do everything we can to avoid a superspreader event, so if you have a problem with the policy, please skip this year.

A Few Words About RC22 Planning
If you have attended RollerCon before, you may already be missing Bacon, who has managed our administrative coordination for years and years. We're happy to announce that Bacon got a super rad job during our downtime - she now manages the Red Cross blood inventory across Southern CA. So - of course that means she doesn't manage all of us [points to everyone at RollerCon] anymore. We're super happy for her, and we hope she will attend RC and just have fun! But for sure we're missing her at HQ, and you may, also, this year especially, while we figure everything out.
Things like:
- replies to your form entries take longer
- answers to some of your emails are delayed
- scheduling is slowed way down while we review all those formerly Bacon tasks
- a bunch of behind the scenes stuff just isn't yet happening

But it's not all missing Bacon. The pandemic cancellations also made us realize there is a lot more to life than sitting in front of computers. So even though RollerCon is the best job on earth, we at HQ are still going to take breaks to sit on the patio and drink tea and watch birds and skate and hang with family and linger over making dinner & eating it, among a lot of other things we had trouble fitting in our schedules before. We're just not working the 15 hour HQ days we used to, even though it would take more than that to do everything the way we used to BC (before covid). Instead we're dropping some of the detail, streamlining events, delegating more, and just - trying not to let everything be top priority stress level all the time, for us and the leadership team that manages each department. There's a lot going on behind the scenes. But it ain't the 15 hour days we had before Covid.

So, at least this year, please enjoy our relaxed deadlines where possible, and our flexibility on things that require you to get your sh*t together (like captain stuff, for example), and in return we appreciate it if you don't stress when our forms still say 2019 and it takes us a week to reply to your email, ha ha. We do this together, friends. RollerCon is going to be awesome! We promise we'll dial in all the spreadsheets and forms and administrative stuff - but not at the expense of enjoying daily moments that need to be enjoyed. Because YOLO for real. We hope the same for all of you.
Get your Dirty Deb coaching fix at the DIRTY SCHOOL OF SKATE youtube channel! Dirty Deb has been coaching at RollerCon maybe as long as we've had training sessions, and she's consistently one of the highest rated teachers in our feedback polls. Her sense of humor and teaching experience combine to make her a super effective coach. But don't take our word for it; see for yourself!
