Program Updates

Starting a Series of Vaccination Information Articles

Asian Media Access has been a part of the state-wide Project HEALINGS (Health Education and Adult Learning Incorporated with Navigating Government Systems) since 2021.

Project HEALINGS was created as a HUB to improve health and wellness of the Minnesotans, who may be disenfranchised by identity and circumstances, who are facing disparities in both healthcare access and health outcomes, and are impacted disproportionately by the COVID-19 pandemic.

We feel one of the barriers particularly for our Limited English Proficiency (LEP) immigrants and refugees is to explain the basic scientific information in a simple but comprehensive way along with the cultural implications of our communities, so these health information can be discussed widely, like at LEP members’ dinner tables, etc..  But since we are in constant emergency mode with the pandemic, many of the messages have become, “Go Get Tested," "Go Get Vaccinated,“  very direct information without much context provided to our communities.

With new case numbers trending down, we should start to allocate more resources to support health literacy, like the basic information to explain what are vaccines, how vaccines are created and approved by FDA, or how COVID-19 virus mutated, along with cultural and social determinants which may impact on high rate COVID-19 infections among BIPOC communities.

Therefore, AMA has teamed up with Chinese American Chamber of Commerce – MN, and with Spitfire, who specializes in health education materials and message development, to create a series of 6 educational articles to mitigate the vaccination myths. We look to build a collective process to engage LEP members in broadening health literacy context with better framework in order to mitigate another crisis like this pandemic in the future.

Following is our 1st article – "What are vaccines?"  We welcome your feedback to better engage with everyone and intentionally build a solution for a complex layer of challenges around health and LEP communities'  vaccination hesitancy, in order to peel away the layers of mistrust and much more.

Article #1: What are Vaccines?

Everyone has made changes in our lives because of COVID-19. Our daily routines are different, like working or learning from home, wearing masks, or staying six feet away from our friends and relatives.

One of the tools for keeping our communities safe from COVID-19 is the vaccine. Vaccines are like a seatbelt for our immune system. The immune system is the body's defense system to fight off sickness and keep us healthy. Just like we wear seatbelts to stay safe in case of a car crash, getting vaccinated helps keep us healthy when viruses like COVID-19 spread.

Vaccines work by training our body’s immune system to fight sickness. If we do catch the virus, our bodies can react faster. That protects us from getting very sick or needing to go to the hospital.

When our body knows how to fight a virus, that is called immunity. Vaccines give lots of people immunity, which means the virus cannot spread as easily through the population. When viruses spread, they can change into new forms. Vaccines help stop viruses from changing into new forms that cause more harm.

Vaccines have helped communities fight viruses for more than 100 years. Vaccines fought off smallpox, measles, and polio and are the main reason these deadly viruses are not common today.  Building off of the experience with smallpox and other viruses, scientists developed safe and effective vaccines for COVID-19. The technology and ingredients used in the COVID-19 vaccines were researched for decades.

Three companies (Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson) developed COVID-19 vaccines that are safe and effective. The vaccine ingredients are similar to food ingredients. They are made up of mNRA, fats, sugars, and salts. Like food, the vaccine ingredients leave your body after they have done their job.

mRNA is the ingredient that makes the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines work. mRNA is a molecule that gives the immune system instructions about how to fight the virus. These harmless molecules allow our immune systems to practice fighting COVID-19 and build a strong defense.

Each of the vaccines went through three strict periods of research and testing to make sure they are safe and effective. Each vaccine also received two approvals. One was from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the government agency in charge of making sure medicines are safe. The other was from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. These are medical and health experts who develop guidelines for safely using vaccines.

Since the vaccines were approved in December 2020, 255+ million people in the United States have taken them. That is why it is now safer to return to school and work. It is also safer to see our loved ones in person.  Getting vaccinated is free and easy. Local clinics, pharmacies, and healthcare centers in your community provide vaccines at no cost. You do not need health insurance or an ID to get one.

After getting the shot, it is normal to feel a little sick. You might have soreness in your arm, headaches, tiredness, muscle pain, chills, fever, or nausea. These are signs the vaccine is working. Your body is learning how to fight the virus.

COVID-19 is especially dangerous for older people and people with other health problems. Their bodies cannot fight off viruses very well. Vaccinations can help these people stay safe from the virus. If you have someone in your family who is older or has a health problem, getting vaccinated protects their health and your own.

COVID-19 has made the last two years scary and overwhelming. But you can take control of your health and protect your community by learning more about the vaccine. Doctors and nurses are ready to answer your questions and ease your worries. So, keep asking questions and talking with family members and friends about their vaccine experience. That will help you decide whether vaccines are right for you and your community. For more information, visit projecthealings.info.

Great Mentorship Opportunity with Target's Asian Business Council

In March 2022, 7 AAPI leaders from Target’s Asian Business Council joined Asian Media Access’ Youth Discussions. All the leaders are involved in helping the community, especially by supporting youth in their personal and professional growth. The goal of the Asian Business Council is to create an environment where Asian team members find belonging and growth.  In this youth discussion, Target leaders shared their current profession, the journey it took to discover their career, and the advice they would give their younger selves. Each leader comes from different departments to help share diverse backgrounds and expertise. Some of the departments included Financing, Procurement, and Software Engineering. Although there are standard roads to get to where they are, many leaders did not take the traditional paths to get to their current careers. For one Target leader especially, Dan, there is no specific path for his profession in agility coaching. For a role in agility coaching, being able to work well with people was the key to landing this opportunity. Agility coaching involves constant collaboration with individuals and teams, and the goal is to help improve the business overall. It is important to understand how a business operates and ensure that the business can actually operate, especially in the most optimal ways. Agility coaching requires skills, but as Dan said, “if we only hired people by their skill, we would have really small teams”. No one hires on just skill alone. Skills are essential, but even with no background of education, being able to build meaningful relationships and be relational can also lead to success in landing an opportunity.

On another end, Target leader, Mark, found himself on a typical path of studying and practicing architecture. Mark got his master's degree in Architecture and followed a traditional career path until Target reached out with a job opening. He never thought that a company like Target would reach out to him to join the team. Mark embraced the chance because he said. “stepping out of comfort zones and exploring the unknown can be beneficial”. Sometimes we think that we have everything planned out and we know the path we want to take, but then there are opportunities that we never even knew or thought were possible. One of the youths said, "I never imagined that there were places like marketing and merchandising that were in the cards with that degree [Architecture], it really helps me think broader about opportunities". As much as we want to follow a direct path into certain jobs, the Target leaders emphasized that sometimes there are no linear paths into certain careers, and even if there are, you could go into something completely different.

This is especially true for Target Leaders, Alisha and Suzanne. Alisha graduated with a degree in Exercise Science, but became a self-taught Software Engineer. Alisha wished she had slowed down and thought more in-depth about her future. Similarly, Suzanne thought she had a direct path to follow. She started off her journey by attending Medical School and almost flunked out. Although Alisha and Suzanne did not follow a traditional course, they were still able to build  sustainable careers. This resonated especially with the youth who are deciding on majors and switching majors. One youth said, "It was so nice to hear about all the leaders starting with a specific major or plan after high school/in college and then hearing that they decided on different routes...It shows that sometimes the things we are going to school for just helps us get into the work mindset and our interests change overtime. It makes me feel better and believe that life is going to work out as long as you put the effort behind it". The influence that each leader at Target makes has a great impact over time. Although it may be overwhelming to figure out our passions and purpose, at any age, each leader instilled that we all have potential. Do not be afraid to try different things to help discover your strengths. Being uncomfortable sometimes can lead to extraordinary growth. Some examples include joining a new club, trying a new sport, or attending a different class. Your passions, values, and interests will inevitably evolve, especially as we discover more routes. Individuals have unique journeys and interests, and there is no linear path to success.

When we were younger, we were often asked what we wanted to be when we grew up, but then as we grew older, we discovered different professions and interests. What we wanted to be could change constantly, but the Target leaders instilled the message that it is part of the process to finding your passion and success. In addition, representation is incredibly important to our youth. It is empowering to see that there are AAPI leaders in great professions, especially ones who are willing to share their stories of success. We are thankful that Asian Media Access and the Asian Business Council leaders could collaborate.

IAM Small Business Initiative

REGISTER HERE

The India Association of Minnesota interns have been working on the IAM Small Business Initiative. The goal of this project is to raise awareness of local Indian owned businesses in the Twin Cities area. As a growing community in Minnesota, we are proud to be a center point from which many organizations can gain following and support, and we wish to further our involvement in the success of our Indian businesses with the creation of an IAM Small Business directory on the IAM website. We started reaching out for registrations in June 2021 and are continuing the information gathering process. We want you to be a part of it.

This project requires businesses to provide some basic information. With this information, we will create a directory located conveniently on the IAM website from which all information, contacts, and links to business websites or social media can be found. This will allow regular IAM followers, as well as Indians, new to Minnesota, to locate the various businesses around the metro area which in turn will help your businesses grow.

Spread the word to all the Indian businesses you patronize to be a part of the IAM business directory. If you have any questions please direct them to smallbusinesses@iamn.org
