Minister’s musings
‘Animator of Intercultural Ministries’ : Announcing a New staff person!
Animator: One who imparts energy and vitality and spirit to others; one who brings something to life.
Intercultural: Individually and in community, we do everything through the lens of culture: there is no such thing as a culture-free perspective. Our experiences and understandings are shaped by our cultures, eg. ethnicity, gender, race, sexual orientation, faith, social class. In an intercultural community there is deep understanding and respect for all cultures acknowledging differences while developing deep relationships.
The Role: Working among the ministry areas of Local Connections, Affirm, TRC, Refugee Sponsorship, and ELL, the ‘Animator of Intercultural Ministries’ will help us live into our call to be a truly inclusive, welcoming and intercultural church. This work falls within the goal area of our Five Year Ministry Plan: Beyond Ourselves.
The Person: With delight and gratitude we welcome Wendy McNaughton to this role. She will fill it with grace, compassion, leadership, and deep understanding, while helping raise up and equip leaders and volunteers, as we live into our life together ‘Beyond Ourselves'. Wendy is already connected in so many ways to the life and ministry of Highlands: Saturday Lunch, ELL, Refugee Committee, Affirm, Leadership Board to name just a few! Wendy brings her background in education, her workshops and course in Canadian Indigenous Studies, her creative eye, and an ability to listen carefully, speak thoughtfully, and guide and motivate. Support Artesana
For 16 years now, our Guatemala partners the Artesana Collective have provided incarcerated women in Guatemala with legal and medical accompaniment, facilitated family visits and programs for their children, and provided accompaniment for women immediately after their release. Highlands have supported their work.
Artesana have now appealed for Highlands' help as they support Carmela to begin a new life, after a court ruled that killing her husband was an act of self-defence.

Gigantic Flea Market Sale
There’s a briskness in the air and the leaves are starting to turn to their glorious Fall colours which means that our Annual Flea Market Sale is coming up! Our sale this year is on Saturday, October 15, 2022 from 9am to 2pm. With your generous donations of household items throughout the year, the church is able to support numerous outreach programs, build community and make a significant contribution to our recycling efforts.
This is a huge event in the life of the church and requires many hands to make it happen. If you haven’t signed up to help out with set-up or on the day of the sale, please click on THIS LINK to access the on-line sign-up form. There are lots of opportunities to have fun and make new friends. Not sure how you can help – drop a line to one of our coordinators below and we’ll find a spot that suits your talents.

Urgent Appeal for Socks
The generous donations of socks for First United from Highlands and other congregations has been completely depleted. Before setting a date for our annual “Socks and Ponchos” appeal the Local Connections Committee is organizing a one day appeal for socks. Sunday October 2nd will be “Sock Sunday”. On that day, there will a collection box in the Welcome Space to receive men’s or women’s socks or cash donations. If it is more convenient for you to leave your donation during the previous week (September 27-30) it can be left at the church office.

- Chatbox ‘hosts’ for Sunday morning online worship (if you know how to say ‘good morning’ in the chat box you already have the skills needed! Training provided.)
- Helpers for Thursday dinners on Oct. 20. Duties include setting up tables/chairs, serving and cleaning up from about 4:45 - 7:00 p.m.

Honour Children Who Attended Residential Schools
On September 30, wear an orange shirt to remember and honour Indigenous children who were taken from their homes. On Orange Shirt Day we also observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. For non-Indigenous Christians in particular, this is a time to reflect on their role in colonialism and the ongoing responsibility to make reparations.

Flea Market News.
The Flea Market is coming on Saturday, October 15 and many, many volunteers will be needed around that time. Details elsewhere in this email.
- Sorting for the Flea Market happens on Tuesdays at 9:00 in the Lower Hall until October 11th but will resume in January. Interested in joining in the fun of sorting? We have lots of opportunities for both men and women so just come on a Tuesday and help out.
- If you can't help sort then maybe you can take a turn helping out at the Drop Off on Saturdays, 10:00 - 12:00. Sign up here:
- Drop off will be closed on Sat. Oct. 15th but will continue after that until Nov. 19th. It will reopen in January.

In Canada, municipalities have influence over roughly 50% of GHG emissions – through building codes, traffic control, land use, etc. Keep this in mind when you decide who to vote for on October 15: Attend all-candidates’ meetings (there’s one at Highlands on Friday Oct. 7, 7-9 pm) and ask candidates “What can you do about climate change?” Research the candidates.
