Orange Shirt Day and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

The Faculty of Arts & Science is contributing to tri-campus, Indigenous-led, Orange Shirt Day programming and events, including the U of T Indigenous Community Gathering, in recognition of the intergenerational impacts of Residential Schools and our responsibility to nurture our relationships with Indigenous peoples, communities and nations.

All members of the University community are encouraged to wear an orange shirt on September 30 in the spirit of reconciliation.

Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society Seminar Series

This week, the SRI Seminar Series welcomes Moshe Vardi, the Karen Ostrum George Distinguished Service Professor of Computational Engineering at Rice University. In his talk, Professor Vardi will discuss what considerations and principles computer scientists can use to develop an ethical framework for their practices. Join virtually or in person.

International SOS provides a range of services for U of T students, faculty, librarians and staff who are travelling abroad for University-related activities. With travel continuing to increase in 2022, we invite faculty and staff for a refresher and/or to learn more about International SOS.

Computation and Data Science Education Community of Practice: Online Session

The Computation and Data Science Education Community of Practice (CDS Education CoP) aims to bring together educators to share their experiences designing and implementing educational activities, pedagogical best practices and use of various technologies. Request to join the CDS Education CoP Microsoft Team to chat with the community and hear about online sessions, including "Teaching Data Science in the Cloud". Centre for Criminology & Sociolegal Studies: Research Cluster Speaker Series

The Research Cluster for the Study of Racism & Inequality is proud to launch the Research Cluster Speaker Series. Fulfilling the mission and vision of the Research Cluster, this special series of lectures will provide opportunities to engage with scholars whose works and research focus on the issues of systemic racism, colonialism, gendered and sexual violence, exclusion and other forms of structural inequality.

Please join the Centre in welcoming the first guest in the Research Cluster Speaker Series, Professor Ted Rutland of Concordia University.

Call for Candidates: President’s Impact Awards

The President’s Impact Awards (PIA) celebrate and honour faculty members whose research has led to significant impact beyond academia. Beginning in 2022, the PIAs will recognize both individual faculty members and teams of faculty members for demonstrable, sustained research impacts that may result from a single influential contribution or from an ongoing commitment to research translation. Call for Proposals: Arts & Science Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Arts & Science Postdoctoral Fellowships are designed to provide outstanding recent doctoral students advanced training in their field of study. These fellowships are not discipline specific, but can be held in any department or research unit across the Faculty of Arts & Science. Applicants must secure sponsorship of a supervisor, or supervisors, from the professoriate (tenure stream) within the Faculty of Arts & Science (St. George Campus).

Tech Tip: Preferred Display Name and Pronouns in Quercus and Microsoft 365 Tools

Some users may wish to change their display name in Quercus and Microsoft 365 tools at U of T. This change is surface-level only and not an official legal name change at U of T. Some users have expressed interest in adding their pronouns to their display name, which can be done in this field as well. At this time, only the first name field can be changed. Contact tts.artsci@utoronto.ca for Quercus and educational technology support.

Arts & Science Process — Principal Investigator Eligibility for Teaching Stream Faculty Members

All Teaching Stream faculty members, Chairs and Academic Directors are encouraged to consult the new Arts & Science process and guidelines for submitting, reviewing and approving My Research Applications (MRA). There is a new, mandatory Arts & Science My Research Application Checklist for Teaching Stream faculty that needs to be included with each new MRA submission, along with the application and budget.

Call for Nominations — U of T’s Teaching Excellence and Student Learning Awards (PDAD&C #8)

These University-wide awards recognize strengths in teaching and learning, and celebrate the achievements of faculty and staff undertaking innovative activities. They include the President's Teaching Award, the Global Educator Award, the Early Career Teaching Award, the Northrop Frye Awards for faculty and staff, as well as the Vivek Goel Citizenship Award.
