Pedagogy of Kindness Talk, Today

(Co-sponsored by IUSB First-Year Writing and UCET)

Monday, October 3 from 12-1pm (Eastern) on Zoom

Join 3 speakers from CUNY Queens College, who will be talking about the Pedagogy of Kindness which is a student-centered approach that focuses on “creating an atmosphere of consideration and care for each learner.” It encourages treating students with compassion, respecting individuality, etc. Particularly as we have all experienced COVID this is a timely topic for how best to support students going through challenging times. Will include a discussion of ungrading as part of the Pedagogy of Kindness. There will be time for discussion at the end. The 3 speakers are:

Community-Building in Online Courses Workshop

https://iu.zoom.us/j/89735565351 Does teaching online feel like sending your syllabus into the void? Do you want your fully online students to feel like part of an inclusive, inviting learning community? Join Stacie Merken and Anna Michelle Martinez-Montavon on Zoom to add to your toolkit of techniques that create connection in fully remote classes. You’ll leave this session with a range of ideas and resources to start building online classrooms that have more of that in-person feel. Come prepared to apply these ideas to an online course you teach (whether live or asynchronous). Even if you don’t teach online, you’re welcome to join us and learn something new!

Quality Matters is a nationally recognized, faculty-centered, peer review process designed to certify the quality of online and blended courses with the goal of promoting student learning. Quality Matters tools can help you through every stage of the course planning, design, delivery, and evaluation process so that you can spend more time discussing content with your students, rather than fielding questions about administrative tasks or the course structure. Join this session to learn more about the funded opportunities at IUSB to learn more about online and hybrid course design, get recognition for your high-quality course design, and support your peers in improving their courses. (Part-Time faculty earn 1 FDU of Learn & Earn).

UCET Teaching with Technology Grants Call for Proposals Now Open!

Applications are now being accepted for the fall 2022 UCET Teaching with Technology Grant. If you have an idea for innovative teaching with technology, if you’re developing/teaching online and need more powerful equipment to create media or if you have other ideas, review the UITS supported equipment list and complete the form located on the UCET Tech Grants page. The grants are likely to be more competitive this semester so be sure to clearly indicate how the technology will improve or innovate your teaching. Submission deadline is October 17, 2022 at 5pm. Applicants will be notified of decisions the first week of November. Contact Amy Pawlosky amypawlo@iusb.edu with questions.

The all-IU Distinguished Teaching Awards and Service Awards deadline is October 6. UCET can help you put together your applications. More information on the Nominations page.

Teaching/Learning Partnerships 
  
A form of co-mentoring and peer review of teaching. Partners from any rank or discipline pair up to visit each other’s classes and learn more about teaching from each other. UCET support for Teaching/Learning Partners includes assistance in locating a partner, assistance in locating information on teaching strategies, and $100 each to spend on teaching related materials. Learn more at this website
