Dear Friend,
Today is International Safe Abortion Day! Access to safe abortion is a fundamental human right and is essential to achieving gender equality. Yet, more than 35 million unsafe abortions are performed each year, resulting in 23,000 preventable maternal deaths.
While much of the world expands access to abortion (such as Mexico, Argentina, Ireland, Colombia, and Benin), the United States has joined a minority of countries regressing on abortion rights following the Supreme Court’s decision in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
You can read some of our recent arguments on the global impact of this human rights crisis, as well as the way forward in the US, in The Nation, Ms. Magazine, and The Hill:
We need a multi-faceted approach here in the United States to mitigate the immediate harms of the Dobbs decision, as well as a long-term strategy to restore the human right to abortion care in the US. This includes first, ensuring that pregnant people can access abortion services and care, no matter where they live. Second, we must build a legal framework for abortion rights in the United States that goes beyond codifying Roe–including by implementing far stronger global human rights standards and obligations. GJC is in this fight for the long term.
Our work is impossible without you. Will you donate in honor of International Safe Abortion Day to help us achieve reproductive freedom and gender equality for all?
Thank you for your enduring commitment to our mission!
With gratitude,
