National Day for Truth & Reconciliation & Orange Shirt Day
Friday, Sept. 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. RCCbc's offices will be closed to honour residential school survivors and those who didn't return home. Our staff are being encouraged to mark the day by wearing orange, participating in events within their communities, and building their knowledge about truth and reconciliation. On Sept. 30 and always, we stand united with our Indigenous colleagues, friends, neighbours and partners and appreciate their contributions to our network and province.
RCCbc is pleased to bring back the BC Rural Health Research Exchange (BCRHRx) on November 29, 2022.
This virtual half-day event is filled with innovation and fun!
For the third year in a row, we're inviting rural researchers, clinicians, medical trainees, Indigenous/community/patient organizations, and interested persons to present and hear rapid-fire style presentations designed to inform, engage and share current rural research in British Columbia.
We want to find out together: “What kind of rural health research is occurring in BC?” And we also want to take this opportunity to collaborate and co-produce future research directions.
Who doesn't love a makeover? Well, when it comes to technology, sometimes you need a brand spanking new reboot! And that's exactly what we're giving to RCCbc's website. We've been working with our website partner, Briteweb, to build a new RCCbc website from scratch—one that provides the ultimate user-friendly experience with improved content, navigation and functionality. The new site will be launched later this fall.

Rural access to specialist support: Make your voice heard
The Real-Time Virtual Support (RTVS) program knows it can be difficult for rural primary care providers to receive timely specialist advice. If you're a rural physician, please take a few minutes to complete this 10-minute survey on access to virtual specialists/subspecialists—the results could directly impact your practice.
RTVS rheumatology lead, Dr. Brent Ohata, will use the information provided to inform the process of adding new RTVS specialist pathways, arrange outreach to high-needs communities, and improve existing pathways to become more user-friendly.
Patients & provider stories needed for BC emergency medical transport study
A new RCCbc study is seeking stories about emergency medical transport to larger centres within the last five years from healthcare providers—and, particularly, patients—from rural, remote and First Nations communities. Interviews will take 30 to 60 minutes by video conference or telephone. Check out the recruitment poster for more information and help the research team by sharing this opportunity with your patients and colleagues. RCCbc grants deadline October 31
The Rural Physician Research Grant Program (RPRGP) aims to empower rural physician researchers—or new aspiring researchers—to pursue innovative rural research and knowledge translation projects contributing to advancing rural health in BC.
The Rural Global Health Partnership Initiative (RGHPI) provides funding to support partnerships between rural BC physicians or medical trainees committed to rural service and underserved rural communities in BC, Canada, and internationally.
To apply for either grant, download the application forms and submit them to RCCbc's Adrienne Peltonen at apeltonen@rccbc.ca. The deadline for the next round of submissions is October 31, 2022.
SmartMom prenatal education offered through text
SmartMom is a free prenatal education program that provides trustworthy educational information to parents through SMS text message three times per week. Topics are tailored to the stages of pregnancy and include fetal development, nutrition, screening, preparation for labour and birth, and more. The information provided is current, evidence-based and developed by maternal and child health experts.
The Nanaimo, Northern and Kamloops Emergency Education Programs, funded by RCCbc and the Rural Education Action Plan, offer a three-month, full-time, remunerated fellowship in Emergency Medicine to family physicians who practice in smaller and rural communities in British Columbia. The application deadline for the spring cohort, which starts in April, is October 15, 2022. The program includes academic and SIM sessions, bedside ultrasound teaching, emergency and procedural learning shifts, and much more.
Climate emergency: Taking action on planetary health
The Climate Emergency conference, hosted by the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE), will return this fall. This virtual event will take place on Saturday, October 29, 2022, at 0745–1615 PDT. Topics will focus on taking action on planetary health.
