What's Growing On?!

Here are a variety of things we have growing at the garden right now!

Vertical Garden Grows!

The environmental resource center helped us plant out our vertical gardens! Here is what we planted: Cilantro, Pak Choy, Bok Choy, Ngo Gai and Tatsoi

Seed Starting

Our volunteers have helped us plant a ton of seeds, which we've put into our brand new handmade shelving! The plants we started include; A variety of legumes, lettuce, cilantro, turnips, poppy and tomato.

Compost Update!

Our left compost bin that we started in May is now starting its process in curing! We are no longer going to add any produce to it and wait for it to get to below 100°F to be inactive.

Harvest Fest Recap

The turnout for the Harvest Festival was great, we had 115 sign-ins! The garden was full of new and familiar faces enjoying a day of delicious food and fun activities. Teodora led our first harvest of the day and provided the group with great insight on the latinx produce. The latinx harvest was then followed by a lively cooking demo led by Irma. Irma made salsa, potato salad and Nopalitos con Huevos  which were all so tasty and packed with flavor. The second harvest was the Southeast Asian beds and it was led by Lan, Bac Bai and Jessie. They led a fun activity that encouraged participants to learn more about the garden and provided knowledge that some were not aware of before. After the harvest was the Southeast asian cooking demo, for this portion students were taught how to properly roll Gỏi Cuốn (spring rolls). They also made Muop Xao tom (loofah saute with shrimp) and Muop xao dau hu (Loofah saute with tofu). We cannot express how grateful we are for Teodora and Irma (from La Mesa Verde) and Lan, Bac Bai and Jessie for coming to be a part of our event. We also had celebrity chef Jet Tila stop by the garden, in which he generously donated some of his signed books. Thank you Jet! For the final portion of Harvest Fest we made our way to the pantry to give them all our produce from our day of harvesting.

Minari Movie Night Recap

We hosted our second movie night, watching Minari last Wednesday with 31 participants. We again powered our movie night with only solar power generated at the garden and enjoyed popcorn grown at the garden. Join us on the last Wednesday of October for our short films night.

Storytelling Recap

We were joined this month by Lisa Martinez for this semester’s storytelling at the garden event. We listened to stories about connecting to nature, family and each other through language and storytelling. We capped the event off with painting rocks as illustrations of a story we held dear to us.

Spooktacular Water-coloring is coming soon!

Fall is coming which means it’s time to start thinking spooky. At this event we will be depicting the “spirit of the plant” with watercolor. There will be watercoloring lessons, spooky music, and free fall food provided by WHISK. No tricks, but lots of treats!
