Help
The Parkinson’s Support Group of Sonoma County is reaching out to you. In the days before Covid we were a vibrant association, with close to 100 people attending monthly pre-pandemic meetings. In response to Covid we moved monthly meetings to online Zoom sessions with excellent speaker presentations to 20 to 40 people who attended. We have our monthly newsletter, our website, dance and exercises classes and an ongoing communication class. We have two caregivers groups, and a women’s group. Our immediate need is to find a new president to take over leadership of our group. We have 8 active board members. The people currently on the board either have Parkinson’s or is a partner of someone who has Parkinson’s. Many of our board members have served for years and cannot take on the responsibilities of being a president.
As the current president, I have recently been on a sojourn across the country and in this last month moved to Colorado to be close to family and friends. Because I am no longer in California, I will be stepping down as a president, although I am still available to be of assistance to the board.
We are looking at options for coordinating with other organizations to provide services to our community and in particular we are hoping to enlist someone who can help us with this outreach. We are also wanting to begin our in-person meetings by the beginning of 2023 and need help in organizing the speaker meetings and providing technical support for hybrid meetings. We are asking you now for input and engagement so that the Parkinson’s Support Group of Sonoma County can thrive and provide support in our community.
Thank you for your participation. If interested in helping, please contact me at tesslorraine@mac.com

California Phone Access Program
This month's speaker is Elizabeth Wong, and she will be informing us about the California Telephone Access Program. This is a state mandated program that provides free specialized telephones to all qualified Californians. This program is beneficial for those who have difficulty in hearing, seeing, moving, speaking or remembering. Elizabeth has been an outreach specialist with the California Phone Access Program for over 10 years. Beside presenting to various groups, she also goes into customer’s homes to assist with their telecommunication needs. When she is not working, she enjoys gardening and fixing things around the house with her son.

Accompanied by live music, our dance class integrates movement from many dance forms (ballroom, folk, ballet, modern, etc.) to stimulate both mind and body. We begin class seated in chairs, warm up each muscle group, then progress to the center to focus on balance and spatial awareness. The class focuses on creative expression and artistry while addressing specific physical concerns such as balance, flexibility, coordination, gait, and strength. We aim to create an enjoyable social environment that emphasizes dancing for its own sake while we have fun. The class is open to all. No dance experience required!
