Dear MATES Families,
As we settle in to the new academic year, we would like to introduce the Parent Advisory Council (PAC) representatives. The PAC includes one member for each grade level, and also includes a teacher and classified staff position, as well as MATES administration. Their role is to serve as a parent contact, support resource, and liaison to the Board and school administration for any questions, concerns, or feedback you might have. Your PAC representatives can either pass along your feedback, or point you in the right direction. This year we are also excited to incorporate Alumni PAC representation, who will serve as a point of contact for you beyond culmination, to continue your relationship with MATES.
Hopefully, many of you had the opportunity to join our PAC-sponsored Volunteer Orientation, and have a greater understanding of the role of our PAC as well as the value our volunteers bring to our school and our educational program.
As a way to stay apprised of the business and direction of our school, we encourage you to attend or view the monthly MATES Board Meetings. Also, our monthly Directors' Dialogue is an informal “coffee chat” time after drop off to hear updates from our school leadership, meet other parents, and ask questions. Additionally, consider sharing your passion or expertise by joining one of the Board committees [Budget, Curriculum, Technology, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Safety, DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), and PLP (Personalized Learning Program)]. Sign up for committees with this link MATES Board Committees.
We are excited to see the return of many of our pre-COVID practices including the morning play time, in-person events, and increased volunteer opportunities. MATES continues to prioritize the safety of our students and the quality of our educational program.
Please feel free to reach out to your PAC Representatives for any questions or support. Their contact information is below. You will also be receiving a more personalized note from your grade level PAC representative in the next couple of weeks.

Dear MATES Families,
MATES participates in the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program by offering nutritious meals every school day. As you know, students at public schools across California can receive two free meals a day. Under California’s Universal Meals Program (AB 130), all students, regardless of their parents’ income are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Parents do need to pre-order
|
these meals to assure that we have enough for each child. While all school meals are free of charge, the Universal Meals Program is meant to supplement, not replace the federal school nutrition program, and all federal regulations still apply for the determination of eligibility for the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. If found eligible, MATES receives additional funds for students who qualify for free or reduced meal benefits.

We ask you to complete the meal application if:
- Your household’s income is within the limits of the federal Income Eligibility Guidelines or
- Children in your household receive benefits from CalFresh, CalWORKs, Medi-Cal or FDPIR or
- Foster children under the legal responsibility of a foster care agency or court or
- Children meet the definition of homeless, migrant or runaway
Please complete only ONE application per household. If you have received a Direct Certification Notification Letter in the mail, you DO NOT need to fill out an application.
When filling out your application, please remember to:
- List all children in the household, whether or not they attend school.
- List all adults living in the household, and each person’s income. If there is no income, mark the “No Income” box.
- If you receive CalFresh or CalWorks benefits, include your case number. Only the case number may be used to determine eligibility. An EBT card number cannot be used to determine eligibility.
- Provide the last four digits of your Social Security number. If you do not have a Social Security number, check the box marked “NONE”.
- Please sign your application.
The application may be found at matescharter.org under the Cafeteria tab. HERE. Turn in your form to the office or email to matescafeteria@matescharter.org.
Please be assured that all information shared remains confidential. If you have any questions, please contact MATESCafeteria@matescharter.org.
Sincerely,
