SENIORS FESTIVAL 2022

This year the Victorian Seniors Festival turns 40, returning in October with a huge month-long program. This major statewide festival held for and with seniors puts the emphasis on fun and good times.

This year’s festival is once again a hybrid event, with many popular performances already published online. Tune into radio plays, interviews and unique music performances any time via the festival website.

A raft of live events is being planned for October. Mark your calendar for:

  • Celebration Day at Federation Square on Sunday 2 October
  • the Festival Hub at the Edge from Monday 3 to Friday 7 October
  • eight days of free public transport for Seniors Card holders from Sunday 2 to Sunday 9 October.
Choir features at Seniors Festival
The choir looks forward to welcoming you at its forthcoming concert, in conjunction with members of the U3A Box Hill and Deepdene choirs, also led by Julie Lancashire, as part of this year's Celebration Day of the Seniors Festival.

Keeping yourself and others safe on Campus
Whilst the wearing of masks is no longer required in most settings (as announced by the Victorian Government - see below) we do encourage our members to be mindful of the continuing COVID-19 infections. Please do not attend courses and activities if you have COVID or have symptoms of cold or flu. We encourage you to maintain social distance and wear a mask if you feel more comfortable in doing so.

Victorian Government announcement 22 September:

As of September 23, masks are no longer required on public transport, taxis, and ridesharing services, but are still required in healthcare settings.

The Victorian State Government has removed the mandate for face masks to be worn on public transport, with the change taking effect from 11.59pm on Thursday, September 22.

Masks will no longer be required on trams, trains and buses, or in taxis, rideshare or tourism vehicles from this date. Instead, masks will be "strongly recommended" in these settings.

You are still required to wear a mask in healthcare settings including in hospitals, care facilities, and allied health services. You are also required to wear a face mask if you have COVID-19 or are a close or household contact of someone with COVID-19 who is not required to isolate.

Masks remain "strongly recommended" in indoor settings, in settings where you can't physically distance, if you have COVID-19 symptoms, and for people who are immunocompromised.

Preparing for 2023
Planning is well underway for courses and activities in 2023. The program will be published in mid November.

However I am still keen to include additional courses and single sessions. We depend on members volunteering to share their interests and expertise. Single session presentations are most welcome.

One area where we desperately need tutors is beginner languages (or any level of language) - French, Spanish, Mandarin, Japanese, or any other language.

We are also looking for volunteers to play in or assist in the organisation of the Orchestra of U3A Hawthorn and the organisation of the Saturday Matinee program in 2023.

Please contact Carol Lancashire courses@u3ahawthorn.org.au if you can help.
