Press Release – For Immediate Distribution

The Presbytery of Boston to host Rev. Nta William Nche of Cameroon

International Peacemaker visit part of annual Presbyterian Peacemaking Program initiative that focuses on peace and justice issues

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Boston, MA September 15, 2022 – The Presbytery of Boston is hosting Reverend Nta William Nche from Cameroon, an international peacemaker who is part of a group of seven individuals touring the country for the next month with the PC(USA)’s Peacemaking Program. Rev. Nta will be visiting a number of congregations in the greater Boston area from September 29th through October 3rd, 2022. For a full schedule of planned events, please visit the Presbytery website, https://www.presbyteryofboston.org. The Presbyterian Peacemaking Program makes it possible for leaders from overseas partner denominations and organizations to visit Presbyterian congregations and institutions in the U.S. to bear witness and interpret peace and justice issues.

Since 1984 more than 350 International Peacemakers from 60 countries have been hosted through the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program. The International Peacemakers focus their time on 3 priority areas of the Presbyterian Mission Agency’s work: dismantling structural racism, alleviating systemic poverty and building congregational vitality. They also help Presbyterian’s live into a biblical commitment based on Matthew 25 by sharing unique experiences and stories from their work in the following areas:
  • Hunger Ministries: I was hungry and you gave me food
  • Clean Water/Environmental Justice: I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink
  • Immigration/Migration/Refugee Welcome: I was a stranger and you welcomed me
  • Poverty Alleviation: I was naked and you gave me clothing
  • Health and Wellness: I was sick and you took care of me
  • Racism/Systems of Oppression and Violence: I was in prison and you visited me
This year the Peacemakers come from seven different countries or regions, including Cameroon, El Salvador, Madagascar, Malawi, Israel/Palestine, Rwanda, and Tuvalu (Pacific Islands). For more information, contact Rev. Trina Portillo at (773) 951-7820, or by email: pastor@burlingtonpres.org. Visit the Presbyterian Peacemaking page for more information about the International Peacemakers.

Camp Wilmot 5K

Camp Wilmot invites the Boston Presbytery to join in their 4th Annual Fundraising Fall 5k on Saturday October 15th! The event centers around a fun run/walk which goes off at 11am and winds around the beautiful dirt roads that surround Camp! Immediately following the race, stick around for a big potluck lunch and time to enjoy boating, the ropes course, archery, a bake sale and more! Some folks opt to come up Friday night for s'mores and a taste of camp fun before the race the next day, and we still have beds available! The 5k is the main fundraising event of the year for Camp, and the money we raise lets us welcome children on scholarship and provide necessities like sneakers and insoles to campers who arrive without them. Folks who are interested can reach out to
campwilmotdirector@gmail.com for more information or find details and registration on our website

New! The Importance of Smaller Churches: Religion News Service ran a story about the importance of smaller community churches in light of their role in helping the migrants recently sent to Martha's Vineyard from Florida.

Book of Order Amendments Booklet: The Presbytery of Boston will vote on the Amendments to the Book of Order at its December Stated Meeting on December 8. The 225th General Assembly (2022) approved 33 proposed amendments to the Book of Order—including a replacement for the entire D-section—to be considered and voted on by the 166 presbyteries prior to July 9, 2023. For an amendment to be adopted, 84 presbyteries must vote to approve it.

The booklet is now available in English; Spanish and Korean translations are in process.

Presbytery stated clerks will use the Portal to report their results. Please submit your reports on each proposed amendment as soon as your presbytery takes action; it will assist those who will work to prepare the new edition of the Book of Order. Because the Book of Order as amended will go into effect on the same day as the final reporting deadline (see G-6.04), suspense isn’t helpful when it comes to publishing the 2023–2025 edition.
