Talk of the Town | "Save the Dells: Our Greater Mission"

"Question: “Your job is done, right?”

Answer: Definitely not! There is much more to do...

...It isn’t enough to have good leaders; they can’t do it alone — the issues are too complicated and frequently require cooperation with other local municipalities, the county, the state, and even federal entities. We as citizens need to stay engaged by communicating with our officials, initiating and engaging in thoughtful discussions of issues, and proposing solution options. The public is increasingly more energized, more engaged, and more willing to speak up and act..."

On September 6, the Daily Courier published a Talk of the Town penned by Save the Dells on the need for an expanded mission after the successes of our first five years of community conservation and advocacy. Our desire is to address any remaining uncertainty about both the incredible accomplishments of our community, and the important role of citizens and community groups moving forward. "This essay again celebrates the amazing Granite Dells in Prescott, Arizona. Be sure to open the images so you can see them in full size along with the commentary that provides context for the images. All photos were taken on my hike on September 10th out along the Peavine and Iron King Trails to Eagle Peak overlooking what we are working to name Elisabeth Creek after Elisabeth Ruffner, legendary activist for many good causes in Prescott. ”

"The prominent peak on the left is commonly called Point of Rocks, though originally the term referred to the entire range that we now call the Granite Dells. The Peavine Trail is hidden in the rocks, but you can see the Iron King Trail extending from middle-right to lower-left.

The early AED plans had roads crossing the trail, a hotel-resort complex and houses above and to the left of the trail, and more roads and houses in the lower-right quadrant. That would have completely altered the visitor experience for trail users.

Now that the valley and these peaks are protected, Prescott is sure to receive important recognition for its visionary decisions. A good chunk of this iconic range is now the anchor for a truly world-class regional park and preserve.”
