CLASS AGENT: ABBY DAVIS '20
We are so happy to share this profile of one of our Class Agents, Abby Davis '20!

What have you done since graduating from ACS?
Since leaving ACS I have been involved in many clubs. I am on the Model United Nations Team, which I highly recommend if you love history, research and public speaking. I am also a Student Liaison to the District 87 School Board. I represent my high school, Glenbard West, during the school board meetings. My favorite extracurricular is the Principals Advisory Bored. PAB is headed by the principal and we, as students, provide an insight into the successes and failures of Glenbard West. I love that PAB lets students have a direct influence in the administration of their own school. I also work at the writing center at the high school, tutoring kids on their writing (English, Science and History). Needless to say, I stay busy.

What else do you do now?
I began to play field hockey which has been so amazing.  I am on the travel team and I start for my school varsity team. Field hockey not only helped me make friends in the age of E-Learning, but has created a space outside of the classroom to have fun. I attended a field hockey program at Northwestern University and Harvard University, as well as a USA Field Hockey Invitational. Nonetheless, field hockey has consumed much of my time since leaving ACS and I love it.

What is one of your proudest accomplishments?
My proudest accomplishment would have to be the summer course I took at Columbia University in New York, entitled Neuroscience and the Law. It was a week long course taught by a defense attorney from the state of New York. We tackled the topic of how mental health and traumatic brain injuries impact ones trial and their guilt.

Thinking back, what is one of your fondest memories from your time at ACS?
Some of my fondest memories from ACS come from the day to day moments. I loved the architecture unit from 4th grade. We were tasked with learning about the architectural history of ACS then we had to build our own museum based upon a topic from the early periods of America. I also loved the Washington DC trip from 7th grade and hosting a French foreign exchange student in 8th. So amazing!!

How did going to ACS impact your life?

ACS does such an amazing job prepping you for high school. No matter what school you end up at for high school, you will be prepared. I struggled at taking tests for so long because I didn’t know how to study. The teachers at ACS taught me that test taking is a personally tailored thing and takes some self discovery. Through that, I no longer have struggles taking tests and now am helping high schoolers learn how to study for their tests.

What was your favorite tradition?
My favorite tradition is either the Washington DC trip or Camp Edwards. But really any sleep away trip. Those trips truly build bonds that continue past ACS.

Why do you think more alums should be involved with ACS?
ACS had such an impact on me and on others that I believe staying connected is a way to give back; even if it’s just a visit or volunteering.
MYSTERY PHOTO
Last month's mystery photo has been somewhat solved! Several alumni weighed in, including Chris Bobowski '95, Tony Engel '91, Sarah Keeney '87, and Bob Kipp '79

Casey Leonhardt '92 is in the back row. In front of her, in the striped shirt is Michelle Tam '93. Next to her is Jon Shatola '93, Arjun Mendiratta '92 (to the right), Ashish Vora '92 (Nike shirt), and Ed Karpiel '93 (white shirt). According to Chris, this was the Math Counts team for 1992/1993.

This month's mystery photo is below last month's photo. Can anyone recognize these students? If so, please send in your answers or a Mystery Photo of your own to Barbara Cosentino
Did You Know?
We are pleased to share the following alumni news:
  • John Bauer '81 was the recent focus of a Men's Journal article. John lost an amazing 110 pounds by focusing on clean eating, weightlifting and triathlon training. John states, "One of the things that motivates me is that I get messages on Facebook from people back in high school who tell me that I inspire them. I never dreamed that I could inspire anybody."
  • Kira Druyan '82 is using her legal background to support her company's workers who are experiencing barriers to employment. As Chief Legal Officer at MOD Pizza, she is spearheading a program that pairs Mod's employees with lawyers offering pro-bono services to help clear past convictions that can be expunged.
  • Lucie Ticho '12, pictured above, was featured on a blog focusing on Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra alumni. Lucie was one of the youngest musicians to be accepted into the program at just 12 years old. She completed Columbia-Juilliard’s combined degree program, and attained a Bachelors in Political Science and a Masters in Cello Performance. She then spent this past year in a Doctorate Program at Rice University’s Shepard School of Music. She will be beginning her first professional orchestra job with the Toronto Symphony this fall.
