From 18-22 September, a delegation from eSpace travelled to Paris to participate in the 73rd International Astronautical Congress (IAC) around this year’s motto “Space for @ll”. With more than 6,500 delegates and representatives from governments, non-governmental organisations, industry and academia, over 250 exhibitors, and conferences, lectures and interactive sessions over five days, the IAC is an annual landmark event for space that brings together the global space ecosystem.

Space Sustainability Rating awarded Sustainable Development & Business Award
|

|
The Space Sustainability Rating (SSR), hosted by eSpace, was awarded the Sustainable Development & Business Award at the World Satellite Business Week (WSBW) Awards in September. This award was one of four celebrating outstanding achievement in the space industry in the area of Earth Observation. “We are proud to receive Euroconsult’s Sustainable Development & Business Award and grateful for the recognition of the collective effort behind the Space Sustainability Rating," says eSpace Executive Director Emmanuelle David.

Unlocking the potential of space for the UN SDGs
|
|
Space resources and infrastructure have a major part to play in the realm of sustainability. The Space Sustainability Rating (SSR) at eSpace is working to incentivise all space actors to take a leading role in helping to realise the ambitions of the SDGs, and deliver positive impact both in space and on Earth. It was recently Global Goals Week, an annual week of action, awareness, and accountability for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), alongside the UN General Assembly. This event serves as a stark reminder that, as outlined in the annual Sustainable Development Goals Report 2022, the world is not on track to meet the SDGs by the 2030 deadline. To accelerate progress toward achieving the SDGs, governments, business and civil society all have a part to play, along with space actors.

Cosmos Archaeology exhibit opens at EPFL Pavilions
|
|
Melding art and science, Cosmos Archaeology: Explorations in Time and Space reveals the depths of the Universe through physical, perceptual and sensory interaction. Harnessing technologies of immersive and interactive visualization and the visual arts, the exhibition transforms the most complex astrophysical data into sounds and images that everyone can experience. Cosmos Archaeology empowers us to explore stars and galaxies formed over 13.7 billion years and to grasp the extent and evolution of our immense Universe in unprecedented ways. Open now until February 2023.

Space4impact join forces with Innovaud for the SyNNergy grant
|
|
Space4Impact is joining forces with Innovaud to run a call for the SyNNergy program to create an innovative project promoting digital transition. The program provides up to CHF100,000 in grant money and coaching to a consortium of companies. With the SyNNergy program, the canton of Vaud is providing a new tool to financially support collaborative and innovative projects related to digital transition. These projects are to be carried out by a consortium of at least three companies, the majority of which must be Vaud-based. SyNNergy provides financial support and coaching to establish collaborative projects that meet a market need by developing a digitally integrated solution. Space4Impact and Innovaud will host an online info session on October 5 at 16:00. The event includes a Q&A and a networking session to give you the opportunity to ask questions and meet other companies to create a consortium.

ESA Clean Space Industry Days
October 10-14: Participants will join sessions covering topics ranging from evaluating the environmental impact of a space mission to designing spacecraft compliant with space debris mitigation requirements. With its global leadership in the field of eco-design for space missions and tackling space debris, ESA’s objective is to boost the European space actors’ competitiveness in these crucial domains.

European Rocketry Challenge 2022
October 11-18: The third edition of the EuRoC – European Rocketry Challenge, the first university rocket launch competition in Europe, promoted by the Portuguese Space Agency – Portugal Space, will bring together students from Europe to launch their projects.

4th CASSINI Hackathon
November 4-6: Could Earth observation and GNSS technologies provide solutions current challenges in insurance, investment, and financial services? At the 4th CASSINI Hackathon, “Space for the Financial World”, held online and in-person at 10 locations in Europe, competing teams will create products and services for the finance industry using EU Space data. In Switzerland, the event will be hosted by Space4Impact in Zürich.

2022 MELiSSA Conference
November 8-10: The 2022 edition of the MELiSSA Conference is a European platform focused on closed-life support systems. It is the place to share and exchange thoughts on fundamental and applied research for Space and Earth applications (e.g. circular economy).

eSpace Seminar Series - Autumn 2022
|
|
The eSpace Seminar Series, a regular event that brings compelling scientists, entrepreneurs, students, policymakers and others in the space field to the EPFL community to share their exciting work and research, is back for the EPFL autumn semester! The first seminar, ExoMars: a planetary mission to explore Mars by Francesco Garrone, will take place on October 3.

EPFL New Space Economy Course
|
|
Space4Impact, eSpace, E2MC Ventures, and Space Innovation joined forces to run the New Space Economy course during the Winter semester 2022/2023 at EPFL in Lausanne. The course is offered as a Master elective course with 3 credits in the EPFL Minor for Space Technologies managed by eSpace and in the Master for Management, Technology and Entrepreneurship. The course is taught bi-weekly by Raphael Roettgen, CFA a venture capitalist and expert of the space industry. This course will teach students the major trends and characteristics of the space economy. The students will examine key business models that use space technologies, especially those that benefit from use cases right here on Earth. As a final project, students will elaborate and present their own business idea.

Xplore finishes second at the European Rover Challenge
|
|
EPFL’s Xplore team won second place at the European Rover Competition on September 11. For their second year in the competition, the team completely redesigned everything: the structure, the robotic arm, the science bay, the navigation and even the control station! And it paid off! Now they're already hard at work for the 2023 competition.

|
On 27 September, the EPFL Rocket Team, which won the European Rocketry Challenge last year, shared everything they have been working over the past year. They took the audience through their different projects and special guests gave speeches. They capped off the event with the main event of unveiling the Wildhorn rocket, the fastest rocket ever built by the association.

Congratulations Dr. Juillard!
|
|
|
And last but certainly not least, our heartfelt congratulations to one of our long time staff members, Michaël Juillard, who publicly defended his PhD thesis at EPFL on September 28. Dr. Juillard is now working at Coactum as Lead Avionics Engineer. We will miss him but are excited to see him do great things in the space industry!
