1132 STUDENTS FROM THE DURBAN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY WILL GRADUATE AT THE 2022 SPRING GRADUATION CEREMONIES

The countdown has begun for the Durban University of Technology (DUT) 2022 Spring Graduation Ceremonies, which will be hosted at the Durban Exhibition Centre on Thursday, 29 September 2022 and Friday, 30 September 2022.

A total of 1132 students from the Durban and Midlands campuses will graduate, comprising of 570 males and 562 females. The graduation list consists of 977 students who will be obtaining their undergraduate qualifications whilst 155 will receive their post-graduate degrees.

The DUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Thandwa Mthembu will confer the degrees and award the diplomas, whilst recognising the achievements of all the graduates.

A SECRETARY’S DAY CELEBRATION WAS HELD AT DUT TO HONOUR THEIR HARD WORK

Deputy Vice-Chancellor: People and Operations at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Dr Vuyo Mthethwa in partnership with the Division of Corporate Affairs hosted a Secretary’s Day Celebration at the DUT Hotel School on Wednesday, 21 September 2022.

The event was held to give thanks and honour the hard work of secretaries and personal assistants who have long been under-appreciated.

The Programme Director of the event was DUT Communications Manager, Ms Noxolo Memela who thanked all the esteemed DUT guests for coming to the occasion and appreciated each and every person, especially acknowledging the staff from the Midlands campuses.

ETHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY DEPUTY CITY MANAGER, DR MUSA GUMEDE TO OBTAIN HIS PHD IN HEALTH SCIENCES

The eThekwini Municipality Deputy City Manager, Dr Musa Gumede will be awarded his Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Health Sciences at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) 2022 Spring Graduation Ceremony to be held at the Durban Exhibition Centre, on Thursday, 29 September 2022 at 09h00.

Dr Gumede (54) who qualified as a medical doctor in 1994 is originally from Umlazi but is currently staying in Durban North. He has been a Deputy City Manager at eThekwini Municipality for Community and Emergency Services since April 2020.

Speaking about his journey at DUT, Dr Gumede said it began in 2016 when he enrolled for his Master’s in Management Sciences.

SURE WORKSHOPS ENRICH DUT STAFF AND ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT

Supporting Undergraduate Research Excellence (SURE) Professional and Academic Development Workshops were held at Musgrave Coastlands Hotel on Monday, 12 September 2022 and at DUTs Innobiz Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (Indumiso Campus) on Wednesday, 14 September 2022.

In opening the workshops, the project leader and manager Dr Anisa Vahed explained that the SURE project emerged as a strategic intervention to advance the reported benefits of undergraduate research (UGR), a renowned high-impact practice.” She expressed her deepest gratitude to the former DVC: RIE Prof. Sibibusiso Moyo for supporting the objectives of the project back in 2019.

DR KERION BOOSI IS VICTORIOUS AS THE ABE BAILEY TRAVEL BURSARY 2022 WINNER

The International Education and Partnerships (IEP) Office at DUT hosted a Celebratory Tea for the Abe Bailey Travel Bursary 2022 winner, Dr Keiron Boosi at the Council Chambers, ML Sultan Campus, on Tuesday, 20 September 2022.

Dr Boosi from Morningside, Durban recently completed her Chiropractic studies at DUT. At the event she was accompanied by her family and friends.

The Abe Bailey Travel Bursary is awarded to outstanding students who have shown exceptional leadership qualities with strong service ethics, qualities that Dr Boosi undoubtedly possesses and it was clearly evident that it was the reason for her winning the award.

DUT IMPACT

As of 18 July 2022, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) staff and students have physically returned to campus after the relaxation of the public health mandates and the COVID-19 restrictions. To get insight on getting back to the “new” normal, DUT’s Communications team Zanele Mashaba spoke to Tabisa Mnyande, Lecturer at the Department of Applied Management.

Q: Kindly tell me about your role and the duration you have been at DUT? 

A: “I have been with DUT since 1996 when it was ML Sultan Technikon back then, I worked at the Department of Finance for 14 years. Currently, I am a lecturer at the Department of Applied Management.”
