  • Robot 101 Event- On Thursday Sep. 29th at noon in the library there will be a presentation about "Creating a Comic Adaptation of R.U.R."

  • There will be a cidering party Oct. 9th 11am-4pm. The location is Carl and Julie Blair's new farm (the old Gale farm) and orchard between Hancock and Calumet at "Gale Farm Rd, Calumet, MI". Please bring your own fruit and jugs. For more info on apple collection look here.
  • Make a Difference Day will be held on Saturday Oct. 22 at 9 am. Registration is due by Oct. 17th at 8 am. For more information and to register check out mtu.givepluse.com.
  • Coffee Conversations have been moved to Mondays. They will be held every Monday from 12:00-1:00 pm. So long as the weather is nice, we will be at the Picnic tables in front of our building if not head on up inside. 
Coffee Cup Recycling - Bristol Waste Company
  • Students and student teams are invited to be a presenter and/or sign up to attend the 2022 Global and Community Engagement (G&CE) Conference (formerly known as D80 Conference.) This is a student centered in-person conference at Michigan Tech on Saturday, October 29, 2022. We are interested in hearing presentations about faculty-led experiences, study abroad, research, student organization, community service, alternative spring break, enterprise, class project, collaborative work with nonprofits, NGO, foundations, etc. The conference link above will give you a good idea of the type of presenters we've had in the past, you'll notice the wide variety of presentations.
  • SS Fall Graduate Meet & Greet - every semester, the GSG in association with our department organizes M&G for the graduate students. The objective is to create discussion regarding concerns, raise questions, and ask for inputs between the student body of SS and the GSG. Faculty members along with GSG representatives are also present.
    This semester, the M&G is scheduled for September 29th, Thursday from 6.00 - 7.00 pm at Prince's point (location subject to changes given the weather). Please do visit!

Volunteer Opportunities and Fellowships:
  • Help promote voter engagement in our community through volunteering to participate in door to door canvasing. Shifts last 11 am to 3 pm on Sunday Sep. 25th and Saturday Oct. 1st. Partial shifts are available but not preferred. A $25 gas honorarium will be provided to all volunteers. Documents and a brief training will be provided at the beginning of both shifts. Anyone interested should email Robert at rehazen@mtu.edu or roberth@wethepeoplemi.org.
  • The Institute for Citizens & Scholars cultivates talent, ideas, and networks that develop young people as effective, lifelong citizens. Fellowships are available for Youth Leaders (under 24 years of age), Scholars & Educational Leaders (leaders, faculty, and doctoral students), and Business & Policy Leaders (adult civic leaders developing effective citizens at the workplace and in communities). Conferences, Webinars, and Talks  
  • If you are interested in attending the in-person MOHA (Michigan Oral History Association) annual meeting in Lansing, please contact Lindsay Hiltunen at lehalkol@mtu.edu.   • The World Social Science Association (WSSA) conference will be held April 12-15 in Tempe AZ. Proposals must be submitted between Sep. 25th and Dec. 10th. If you are interested in attending or finding out more see http://www.wssaweb.com/ or email Chelsea Schelly at cschelly@mtu.edu.
  • -For Undergrads and Recent Grads- The C2C Fellows Network, offered through the Graduate Programs in Sustainability at Bard College in New York, is an international program for undergraduates and recent graduates aspiring to leadership work in sustainable politics, NGO's and business. They will be hosting a virtual workshop from 9 AM-5 PM ET on Saturday 12/3. There is no cost to attend. Grant Opportunities
  • Department of Social Sciences Graduate Travel and Research Award

    The Department of Social Sciences Graduate awards support research degree graduate students (MS, Ph.D.) the opportunity to enhance their research and professional development.  

    Grants of up to $500 per year are available to travel to a professional conference or apply toward other research expenses. The award cycle covers travel/research between August 15, 2022 - January 1, 2023. The Graduate Committee will evaluate proposals and announce awards in early October.

    Deadline to submit for Fall 2022: September 30, 2022

    Terms of Award:
    • Complete and submit the application linked here. 
    • Follow all University Travel Protocols and Ethical Guidelines for Research 
    • Submit all receipts under one file to the Social Sciences Program Administer.

    • Submit a 1-page statement of award activities to the Coordinator of Student Programs and Graduate Director by January 30, 2023.

  • The Michigan Space Grant Consortium is funding numerous opportunities for various levels of education to "foster awareness of, education in, and research on, space and Earth-related science and technology in Michigan." Check out this link for more information.

  • 2022 Michigan Fall Democracy Fellow Position Description:
    Campus Vote Project is seeking students who are passionate about democratic engagement, are politically interested, and are self-starters. Campus Vote Project is dedicated to helping students gain access to the ballot and increasing youth voter turnout.  As a fellow, you will have the opportunity to work with administrative and faculty partners. You will work with the on-campus team to complete the four planning steps of the Students Learn Students Vote checklist, created to build power and ensure success. You will also be responsible for meeting deadlines and carrying out nonpartisan voter engagement activities on your campus.
