Bronze Age burial mound viewing opportunity

Following a major archaeological excavation at the Eddeva Park new homes development site on Worts Causeway, a Bronze Age burial mound with associated cemetery has been found. Developer This Land and Oxford Archaeology are now hosting two public open days offering guided tours at the site, tomorrow (24 September) and next Thursday (29 September). There will be 30-minute guided tours with space for 25 people per group, to allow the team of archaeologists to share their work with local groups, schools and local residents. To request a place on a guided tour, please book here.
This Land has also told us that the permissive footpath from Babraham Road up to Worts Causeway will now be closed until November, to enable water main works to commence.

COVID Clinic helpers needed again!

The volunteer response to the COVID vaccination clinics last year was astonishing, and we've got the chance to get the team back together again next month. The local NHS is holding a big combined COVID and flu clinic for local residents next Saturday (1 October) at Cornford House Surgery, and will need help for 'meet and greet' and car park marshalling, just as before. If you've got two hours to spare and would like to join in, please let us know here.

Do you have an unused bike?

A local resident is helping to find bikes for kids and adults arriving from Ukraine – it’s often an essential item for them to get around Cambridge, get to schools and jobs, and explore. They're looking for donations of unwanted bikes of all sizes (preferably bigger ones, for age 7 and up). All offers are recorded in a spreadsheet and, when a bike is needed, the owner can be put directly in touch with the person who needs it. There are also two amazing volunteers who can fix bikes that need some light maintenance/mending. So far more than 50 bikes have been donated but the demand is still there. If you can help, please contact Maria at ionides.ma@gmail.com

A chance to see violins being made

Did you know that Queen Edith's has a thriving violin making business? Now's your chance to see what goes on. Cambridge Violin Makers  is holding an open day tomorrow (24 September) from 11am to 4pm – it's free to visit, and all are welcome. There will be a display showing how violins are made, real life demos of violin making, and students as well as staff can answer questions from visitors. Cambridge Violin Makers is at 70a Hartington Grove and you can find out more about them at their website.

Pop Up Fruit Stand tomorrow

There will be just one fruit stand this Saturday, at 36 Kinnaird Way, from 2pm. It will be selling damsons, two varieties of plums (Wallis Wonder and Purple President), four types of eating apples (Russet, Spartan, Lambourn and Cox), two types of cooking apples (Bramley and Howgate), and three varieties of pears (Conference, Concord and Superfin). Profits go the Community Food Hub.

Bring & Buy Sale tomorrow

Find yourself a bargain tomorrow (Saturday 24 September) at a Bring & Buy Sale taking place at St James' Church on Wulfstan Way from 10am to 12noon. There'll be books, cakes, bric-a-brac and a raffle, as well as a coffee morning.

Support local musicians at upcoming gigs

The area is showing its musical talent at several gigs in the city. Local resident Paul Elbro is part of the band Shoot The Pianist, who will be joining Blue Cinema for a fundraiser supporting the Cam Skate Donkey Common Skate Plaza Project, tomorrow (24th September) at the Portland Arms. Shoot The Pianist "faithfully play punk and new wave classics with the authenticity that only those who came of age with this music can deliver." Sounds great. More information here.
Meanwhile, well-known local songwriter and performer John Meed will be performing in what should be a terrific 'Acoustic Music Night', sponsored by the Friends of Rock Road Library, next Friday (30 September). The evening takes place at the Quaker Meeting House in Hartington Grove, and also features The String Section (above), a Cambridge-based 'transatlantic trio' playing fiddle tunes, Americana and blues. Entry is free, and proceedings kick off at 7.30pm – there'll be a retiring collection for the musicians.
Finally, Anna Hester (above), who we wrote about last year in Queen Edith's magazine, is finally performing the material from her Postcard Songs album with a live band on Saturday 15 October at Storey’s Field Centre. Listen to the album here and there's full information on the gig here. It should be a great evening.

Council funding to improve the area: ideas needed

The  City Council has launched its Environmental Improvement Programme (EIP), which gives residents the opportunity to identify where to invest £170,000 in grant funding on "small-scale physical improvements to the city’s streets and open spaces." Anyone living in Cambridge can suggest projects for EIP funding, such as work to improve war memorials and recreation grounds; planting trees and wildflower areas; and installing gates, benches, notice boards and wayfinding lighting. Let's have some great ideas for our area! Read more about what to do here.

Share your Emergency Care experience

Addenbrookes and the Rosie Maternity Hospital are inviting patients and carers to join one of its upcoming 'Emergency Care listening sessions'. These offer the opportunity to share experiences and opinions (online) on how you were supported when seeking urgent and emergency care, to help the Trust to respond to current and future patients’ needs. The sessions take place in October, but please email cuh.foundation@nhs.net by next Friday for more information.

Food Hub news

The Queen Edith's Community Food Hub is open tomorrow (Saturday) as usual, from 10.30am to 12noon at St James Church on Wulfstan Way. All in need are welcome, no questions asked. The Coffee Chat is open too.

Food donations may be brought to the church on Saturday mornings from 10.00am to 10.30am. The team tells us it's usually particularly in need of items like tinned beans (although not baked beans), tinned fish, breakfast cereals, tinned fruit and tinned rice pudding, but all donations are welcome.

Financial donations are also more welcome than ever. The project continues only through the generosity of local residents and businesses.
