SEPTEMBER 2022
Hello Extraordinary Professionals!
September is International Update Your Résumé Month! If you have not done so yet, don't let the calendar flip over without investing a little time in this very important activity. Make sure you are prepared when opportunity knocks at your door!
Did you know 98% of Fortune 500 companies use applicant tracking system (ATS) to sort through résumés (Jobscan 2018)? If that sounds like a résumé-building game-changer, that’s because it is!
From including keywords to tailoring your résumé’s content to the job you’re pursuing, there’s a whole new playbook for getting your résumé to stand out from the crowd.
Here are a few tips on writing a resume that actually grabs attention.
Showing, not telling, is always a better approach - especially when it comes to writing your resumé. Steer clear of vague statements with fluffy adjectives like "detail-oriented self-starter who loves collaboration." Instead, focus on sharing concrete examples, facts, and metrics that illustrate those competencies. For instance, you could write about how you initiated a new cost-saving project on your own. Or how you had the top sales at your company for the last 3 years. Or how you’ve received promotions at every job you’ve ever had. Those facts will make a far greater impression on recruiters than any adjective ever could.
Use Keywords. Stand out from other candidates by looking for keywords that are used often and prominently in the job description, and be sure to incorporate these into your resume to make sure it is aligned with the job. Doing this shows employers that you have the skills they want.
Tailor your resume content with a Skill Summary. When you're scanning a job posting, look for skills that are listed next to phrases like "must be able to" and "minimum requirement." These phrases show that the employer sees these skills as important, so you should list them prominently on your resume in your skills summary. A future employer needs to see that your experience demonstrates an ability to do the job you are pursuing. By tailoring your resume to show that you are the type of person they want, you increase your chances of being a likely candidate for the job.
Less is more. A resumé should be a snapshot of your most relevant skills and experience. You don’t need to list every job you’ve ever had or every skill you’ve ever mastered. Just focus on the skills, experiences, and results that are most relevant to the job you’re pursuing; and this will show that you have the necessary qualifications to be effective in the job.
Stay well,
Tammeca

RESUME REFRESH OR REVAMP?
When you already have a resume, at a certain point you’re faced with a dilemma: Should I update my existing resume, or is it time to completely revamp it?
When you’ve got a great resume — especially one created by a professional resume writer — it can be difficult to decide to throw it out and start over again.
