Last Day of Term 3 - Friday 30 Sept - school closes at 1pm

Headmaster's Message

As we approach the end of Term 3, it is an opportunity to reflect with gratitude on what has been achieved. These include:
  • Recognising the incredible and unique life of service of Queen Elizabeth II
  • The lifting of pandemic restrictions
  • The mahi that has gone into preliminary exams by staff and students
  • The joy, fellowship and achievements experienced through Winter Tournament and the AIMS Games
  • The ability to gather again as a faith community with the Father & Son Masses and Breakfasts
  • The sporting codes prizegivings which celebrate the talents of students and contribution of staff and parents
  • The inaugural Samoan Fiafia night
  • Normality again on the school campus
All of the above and much more do not happen by accident. They come to fruition because we have at Sacred Heart College, a community that is willing to put others before self and because they want our boys to fulfil their God-given potential. As the Tumuaki, I am filled with gratitude to work in such a community.

Patrick Walsh

Pakistan Floods - Caritas Urgent Appeal
As the death toll continues to rise in Pakistan due to extreme rainfall and flooding, Caritas Internationalis has launched an Emergency Appeal to provide relief for victims of this unprecedented natural disaster. More than a third of the country has been completely submerged by the heaviest recorded monsoon rains in a decade, leaving the country’s poor and vulnerable most in need of immediate humanitarian support.
Around 33 million people have been affected by extreme rainfall and flooding in Pakistan, and more than 1,200 people – including around 450 children – have died. To date, over 300,000 homes have been destroyed and a further 692,000 homes damaged.
In addition, government officials report over 800,000 hectares of agricultural land has already been destroyed and around 730,500 livestock lost, leaving several farmers without livelihoods to provide for their own families.
Caritas Internationalis have launched a Rapid Response project aimed at providing thousands of men, women and children with sufficient food, safe drinking water, health services and access to hygiene supplies.

Please encourage your son to bring a donation to Homeroom on Wednesday and Thursday next week. A sausage sizzle and lolly sale will be held during interval and lunch outside the Uniform Shop on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week. Thank you for your support.

Year 12 PE Camp

Our Year 12 PE classes took advantage of greater freedom and headed to the World Heritage Park of Tongariro National Park and Ohakune last week. During a 4 day trip of white water rafting, tramping, mt. biking and skiing/ snowboarding at Whakapapa, all the students got out of their comfort zone, worked well as a group and made the most of their time in a special part of the world. The environment challenged all of us and allowed them to demonstrate social responsibility and appropriate safety management. Thank you to the students who were great ambassadors, and we hope you will get out in the great outdoors again in the future.

Art, Music and Culture

Music Showcase

Join us for the music event of the year, our annual Showcase on Thursday 29 September. Doors open at 5.30pm with hot food, drinks, raffles, and a cash bar. All funds raised on the evening will go towards new instruments for the music department.

Leading up to Showcase, we are collecting raffle items. If you have anything suitable you would like to donate (such as packaged food, or bottles of wine), we would love your support. Please drop them off at the Music Department or Main Office (attention to Music Department) during school hours.

Teuila Fiafia Night

Thank you to all those who attended our first Samoan Fifia night. It was a wonderful occasion filled with energy and passion from our student performers and guests. A huge thanks to everyone who helped bring the evening together, and we look forward to sharing an event like this again in the future. Please see our website for photos.
On Tuesday, the whole school was also fortunate to enjoy a performance from our Samoan group.

Celebrating our students

Ivan Mantes (Year 12) performed a sample of his musical talent this week in front of his Year 12 peers and staff during an assembly in the Chapel. His chosen song, Butterfly Effect demonstrated his ability to write meaningful and powerful lyrics and he accompanied this with his acoustic guitar. The applause received by Ivan highlighted the enjoyment and admiration felt by the audience. Ivan is releasing more of his work this weekend on Spotify.

Summer Uniform - Term 4

A reminder that we move into Summer Uniform from the beginning of Term 4. All students are expected to wear a short-sleeved shirt for their everyday uniform, and a white long-sleeved shirt and tie for Formal Uniform days. Please ensure you have all the necessary items prior to the school holidays.

Sandals

From 2023 sandals will no longer be worn with the Summer Uniform. Boys will be expected to wear black leather lace-up shoes with school socks with both Summer and Winter Uniform. A reminder when purchasing school shoes they need to be black leather lace-up shoes. Not sports shoes or trainers.
If you have any queries regarding the school uniform, please refer to the College website, email Kelly Jennings, Uniform Shop Manager, or call 09 529 3669.

Atu-Mai workshop - LeVa group

On Tuesday around 30 students attended the Atu Mai workshop facilitated by the LeVa group. As we entered the workshop, we were greeted by the warm Pasifika environment that the Atu Mai tutors have created out of the foyer of the Auditorium. They were very welcoming and kind to the boys and were very passionate about the content they wanted to share. All three of the tutors were very engaging and fluent in the ideas they wanted to express and the boys really enjoyed working with them because they were of similar upbringings and were relatable. For this specific workshop, we covered the "I am" module which was focused on strengthening our self-worth through culture. We also learned to understand where we stand as Pasifika descendants, understand the benefits and understand the values that we hold as Pasifika people in Aotearoa. For example, we as Pasifika are natural-born connectors, which basically alludes to the fact that because we have an understanding of the customs of two or more cultures we are able to unite those cultures through ourselves. This workshop was also to promote standing up against violence and often the negative narratives that implicate us as Pasifika, especially as students. The workshop was an eye-opening experience and I hope that in the future they would come back because they are always welcome. Tonga Helu (Year 12).

For further information please go to Atu-Mai Workshops - Le Va.

Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) is only days away!

The past couple of years have been tough and it's easy to feel disconnected from the people and places that are important to us. Whether it's reaching out to someone you have lost contact with, visiting a place that's special to you or getting outside in nature. We hope you and your whanau join us this MHAW (and into the holidays) to reconnect with the people and places that lift you up - hei pikinga waiora.
Here are some ways to get involved next week.

The Light Project – Porn and Young people in Aotearoa

Further to our parent evening with guest presenter Nikki Denholm from The Light Project earlier this term, and followed by our school-wide assembly presentation by Richie Hardcore on the theme of ‘Healthy masculinity and respecting women’, we are welcoming these presenters back next week to run Year-level student seminars on the topic of Pornography.
School leaders, teachers and staff together with parents and whanau play an important role in helping young people navigate this topic, by equipping them with porn literacy skills. This is a set of skills to help young people critically examine and identify the negative messages in porn and understand how messaging relates to them in real-life, in terms of consent, respect, emotional connection, safety and health.
These seminars will be facilitated by guest presenter Richie Hardcore in conjunction with the Light Project for students in Year 8 and above. For further information and parent resources, please go to The Light Project website.
