A majority of blind and visually impaired people continue to lead dependent lives, with little or no access to education and employment. They are either unaware or unable to reach the services and facilities that can benefit them. One such example is seventeen-year-old Rajneesh Kumar from Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh.

Rajneesh was born blind and his parents took a while to realise they could enroll him in a special school for the blind. As a result, he started school late. When he started to learn the braille script, it opened a new world of knowledge for Rajneesh. He became interested in reading books, especially pertaining to mythology.

But he couldn’t find enough books that were available in braille for him to read. That’s when he called the Eyeway Helpdesk to explore a way to pursue his passion of reading. Our counselor connected Rajneesh to the National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities (NIEPVD), where he could ask for several books in accessible format.

During his interactions with Eyeway he expressed curiosity for other resources for visually impaired persons. The counselor educated him about the many social security schemes that both the state and central government provide to persons with disabilities (PwDs). To avail benefits like disability pension, bus and railway concession, or scholarships, he would require a Unique Disability Identification (UDID) card.

The Eyeway counselor explained the entire process of application to him, and also identified an organization in Uttar Pradesh, that helps PwDs with all the paper work. After getting in touch with this organization, Rajneesh shared all his documents easily via WhatsApp. Just by virtual correspondence, he acquired his UDID, with which he can avail benefits. He has already applied for disability pension.

Eyeway bridges the information gap for blind people across India, which connects them easily to resources, service centers, training programs, and much more. This helps them realise the dream of independent living with dignity.
