Hoe en waarom, willen en kunnen wij mensen in de toekomst mensen maken? En welke rol spelen biologie, cultuur en sociale patronen daarbij, maar ook technologie, economie en macht?

Geboren worden is vooralsnog een gegeven voor ieder mens, net als de dood. Rondom de reproductie van het leven, hebben zich diepgewortelde systemen gevormd die soms onveranderlijk lijken, maar dat niet hoeven zijn. Met Reproduction Otherwise zoomt MU in op radicale scenario’s en creatieve speculaties over de veranderende praktijken en visies rond menselijke voortplanting in de 21ste eeuw.

Aan de hand van het werk van zeven internationale ontwerpers / kunstenaars—sommige innig samenwerkend met wetenschappers, andere werkend vanuit een queer perspectief, of een combinatie van beide—stelt MU het complexe, muterende denken en doen rondom menselijke voortplanting ter discussie. Daarbij vragen we niet ‘als vanouds’ the powers that be—politiek, geloof, medici—om zich hierover te buigen, maar willen we iedereen betrekken.

How and why, will and can humans make humans in the future? And what role do biology, culture and social patterns play in this, as well as technology, economics and power?

Being born is for now a given for every human being, just like death. Around the reproduction of life, entrenched systems have formed that sometimes seem immutable, but need not be. With Reproduction Otherwise, MU zooms in on radical scenarios and creative speculations on the changing practices and visions around human reproduction in the 21st century.

Based on the work of seven international designers/artists—some working intimately with scientists, others working from a queer perspective, or a combination of both— MU questions the complex, mutating thinking and doing surrounding human reproduction. In doing so, we do not 'as usual’ ask the powers that be—politics, religion, medics— to address this, but want to involve everyone.
