Zambia APC Run June 2022

Introduction

The 6th conference run for 2022 was scheduled for Zambia. For all runs south of Zambia, we always opt to drive; and the Zambia run is our longest drive (circa 4000km round trip).

The team started on their journey at 05h00 on the 9th of June, from Kempton Park, Johannesburg. The first stop was Francistown, Botswana but upon approaching the city, the vehicle broke down, this was approximately 15km outside of Francistown. Unfortunately, with their phones not working, they were stuck on the motorway in pitch darkness. Finally, about 30 minutes later, a kind gentleman stopped to assist them by letting them use his phone, thus they were able to secure roadside assistance, and reach their lodgings late that night.

The following day, they were able to secure the assistance of a local mechanic who identified that the problem was the alternator

The following morning at 06h30, we headed for the Kazungula border; then across the Zambezi River into Zambia to organise the consignment at Livingstone, Zambia.

The team for this run included: Pastor Rodney Queen (Central Baptist Fellowship Church, Macon, Georgia, USA), Rose Khambule (Accounts and Book Sales), and Joshua Bolaji (Welkom Baptist Church, South Africa).

Pastor Rodney flew into Zambia, via Nairobi, then onto Ndola airport where he met the team for the
first time, Although Ps Queen’s church have been supporters of the APC for eight (8) years, this was his first time on a run.

The theme for this year is: The Pastor: Rightly Handling the Word of Truth

The nine topics covered are:
  • The Pastor: Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth
  • The Pastor and his approach to Scripture
  • The importance of rightly dividing the Word
  • The relationship between the OT and NT
  • The Pastor must interpret Scripture with Scripture
  • Understanding the historical context
  • Determining the literary form of the text
  • Resolving the grammatical construction of the text
  • Thinking theologically about the text
  • Determining the contemporary applications

Upon arriving in Livingstone, and settling at the accommodation at Mosi-O-Tunya, The team set about organising the consignment for all five conferences. To assist Pastor Joshua and Rose, four men from Trinity Baptist Church, Livingstone were hired. This was necessary because a day was lost due to the car problems. Once the consignments were finished, the team headed north for Lusaka, where they stayed for the night to rest and leave the trailer containing the boxes for the Lusaka, Mazabuka, and Livingstone books. After the night’s rest, they headed further north to the city of Ndola to prepare for our first conference.

 Preaching

All the local organisers were very enthusiastic, and of great assistance to the team. They had been looking forward to this year’s conference, and theme, especially after the lockdown restrictions of 2021. The Zambian run is one of the best organised, if not the best.

An interesting pattern was noticed during this run of conferences, the first day was always well received, but the second day always left the delegates pensive.

The three talks that caused this were:
  • The Biblical Genre;
  • Resolving the Grammatical Construction of the Text/Passage; and
  • The Pastor must think theologically about the text.

At each of the conferences the delegates wanted the speakers to keep going, to the extent that the teachings extended to one-hour-and-fifteen minutes. Both Pastor Rodney, and  Pastor Joshua spent much of their talks giving example-after-example and giving the definitions of what we were teaching on. They wanted to demonstrate to the delegates how these principles of interpretation worked in practice.

Questions for Q&A:

These were the most popular questions:
  •  Please provide clarification concerning how the gospels are more descriptive, than prescriptive.
  • How should we go about choosing the right Bible teachers?
  • Pastor Rodney, you have been in the ministry for 41 years, what advice would you give a young pastor about the ministry?
  • How much time should a pastor spend on a sermon?
  • How can we improve our knowledge and understanding of the Old Testament?
  • Which Bible translation should we use?
  • Can a woman be a pastor/elder?
  • Why is it that not all Bible colleges teach these things?
 Comments
  • All the speakers were helpful to me because they opened my spiritual eyes as a pastor I need to preach, teach the word of God
  • I really enjoyed all the sessions and they have stirred my spirit. I come to now know more ways on how to divide the word of God
  • The sessions helped to remind me to prepare the text seriously and understand the Bible fully before standing before the flock
  • All the sessions were very helpful because they helped and equipped me with knowledge to rightfully divide the word of truth.
  • The sessions offered me an opportunity to grow. In a nutshell the sessions were impactful, eye opening in helping us know how we should study and apply biblical truths.
APC thanks:
1. God for the great conferences in Zambia.
2. God for travelling mercies, provision and help in preaching for the speakers.
3. For APC donors in the USA, UK and Australia for their generous financial support of these conferences.
4. For the Local organisers and hosts in Ndola, Kitwe, Lusaka, Mazabuka and Livingstone

Please pray:
1. That God’s work in Zambia will continue and grow
2. That the delegates would read and use the books, and that doctrinal errors would be corrected
3. That the talks would be remembered and applied both individually and corporately
4. That pastors would preach biblical sermons and that their congregations would benefit from them
5. For the ongoing work of the APC in training Pastors on the African Continent
