First, From the Heart
This is a ripe moment in time to honor transitions. Witness the new moon, equinox signaling a change in seasons, the start of a new school cycle, and a New Year on the ancient Jewish calendar. Whenever we pay attention to transitions, they tend to offer us a chance to pause, to reflect, and to choose.
As we celebrated Wednesday’s International Day of Peace (and also the International Day of Gratitude) we were reminded that peace is possible; that despite the suffering of raging wars and the multitude of injustices around the world, the feeling of peace within our own hearts is an intentional choice.
Please join us Thursday the 29th for the next Global Compassion Community Gathering, a 90-minute respite to practice peace together. Dr. Sará King will share The Science of Social Justice (SSJ) framework which explores how well-being and social justice are one and the same – especially when we re-define “justice” as “loving-awareness-in-action.” We hope to see you there!
Together, in peace,
Laura

Courageously Changing the World with Compassion
In celebration of this week’s International Day of Peace, we would like to share the article we wrote for this summer’s Peace Chronicle, the journal of the Peace and Justice Studies Association. Peace and justice require us to address the systemic issues underlying and causing suffering. Systems change is where courage and compassion come together to make a difference in our challenged world. Read more.

Practice Matters
Seek Peace
A deep peace resides in each of us. Really, it’s there. Often I find that hard to believe. Yes, I’ve touched inner peace now and then, for a brief moment or two. Yet my desire is to dwell there more often, even at will, such that it becomes a more regular way of being.
The inner turmoil of daily life is loud, chaotic, and frankly disempowering. The schisms within me become the schisms with others and in the world at large. We are living with the global consequences of our individual inner turmoil.
Peace begets peace. I now seek out practices that help me bring peace home – to access my true nature that IS peace. As I more frequently visit the peace within, it becomes more easily accessible and regenerative. Here is to more practice. Here is to more peace.
When can we practice? Always!

Global Health Compassion Rounds
Translating Science into Action: Measuring & Enhancing Compassion
Focus Area for Compassion and Ethics (FACE)
Tuesday, September 27, 2022 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM ET
This Global Health Compassion Rounds focuses on measuring and enhancing compassion – translating the innovative work of researchers into a discussion about real-world application. In global health, it is important that we are able to demonstrate the effectiveness of compassionate approaches to care, not only to cultivate compassion but evaluate our progress toward quality care and foster buy-in from leadership and staff.
Join Focus Area for Compassion and Ethics (FACE) in thinking about how compassion measures and other value-based metrics can aid in efforts to enhance compassionate care, and what future research is needed to meet the needs of the people working to do so – at the individual, facility, community, and health system level.
Panelist perspectives will reveal opportunities and barriers to measuring compassion and improved quality of care. The learnings from this webinar can guide others in global health as they consider how they might implement new or adapt current efforts to enhance compassion in their settings. Virtual CLIF Forum: Sander Tideman & Matthias Birk on Triple Value Leadership
Center for Mindfulness & Compassion at Cambridge Health Alliance
Monday, October 3, 2022 7:00-8:00 PM ET
In this webinar, Sander Tideman and Matthias Birk will discuss the importance of Triple Value Leadership, a new kind of leadership that enables businesses to effectively address societal and ecological challenges. It is also the focus of his recently released book, also titled Triple Value Leadership.
At its core, Triple Value Leadership focuses on compassion for oneself, one’s organization, and for society at large. It starts with recognizing our collective capacity for awareness, compassion and collaboration. We are all in the same boat, facing very turbulent waters. A key concept is the “systems mindset,” which is needed to fully understand how business is dependent on society, the environment, and how we are all connected. It is this interconnected and collaborative worldview that makes it possible for businesses to better innovate, enhance employee well-being and performance, and become more diverse and inclusive.
Sander & Matthias serve on the faculty of CLIF (Compassionate Leadership in Finance), a program of the Garrison Institute that seeks to develop and cultivate this type of leadership in the financial sector. Find out more and register.
