Yom Kippur, Day of Atonement

with Rev. Jenny Peek

Join us this Sunday as we explore Judaic wisdom of recognizing our fallibility and the role of atonement in 21st century Unitarian Universalism.
Our wonderful musicians, Brian Attebery (cello) and Mark Neiwirth (piano) have prepared special music for the occasion.

One of the most important of Judaism’s high holy days, the culmination of the Days of Awe, that begins with Rosh Hashanah. It was established in Leviticus 23:26-32. "Yom Kippur" means "Day of Atonement." It is a day set aside to "afflict the soul," to atone for the sins of the past year. Themes of the day include repentance, reconciliation, asking for forgiveness. “Atonement” can be broken down into:
At-one-ment”, implying that when we forgive and are forgiven, we are brought back into relationship with one another.

Wilks Funeral Home joins us for the program, focusing on the needs, hopes and concerns of all who identify as queer or LGBTQIA+.

Laws and social customs impact how we grieve and honor our loved ones who have died. “Death & Donuts” is open for all who desire space for this often neglected subject of our mortality. Unique in that this is not meant as a grief support group,
participants share insights and questions together. Death and Donuts is a space for sharing our insights, questions, hopes and fears around death.
And yes, we serve donuts!

2023 Religious Exploration Sessions
on the UUA Common Read

Religious Exploration sessions during January/February 2023 will be devoted to discussion of the UUA Common Read, led by Jennifer Attebery.

This year's book is
Mistakes and Miracles: Congregations on the Road to Multiculturalism, by Nancy Palmer Jones and Karin Lin (Skinner House, 2019).

The book "shares how five diverse congregations encounter frustrations and disappointments, as well as hope and wonder, once they commit to the journey to create multicultural, antiracist Beloved Community."

PUUF will place a bulk order for the book. If we order 10 or more, there will be a 10% discount on the price of $22. The fellowship can provide books gratis to any in need.

Let Jennifer Attebery know by October 23 of your interest in purchasing or receiving a book.
