Urgent: Help Afghan Refugees
JCIRA has been supporting Ali, Storya, and Nihal, a family of Afghan refugees who were evacuated because Ali worked for US forces during the war. Because of US immigration laws, they could be subject to deportation in less than a year. These are our friends. We must help them and others.
The solution is the Afghan Adjustment Act currently before Congress but continuing to hit roadblocks. This link https://p2a.co/nn9fdmu makes it easy to send emails to Senators Murray and Cantwell and to Representative Kilmer urging support.
Background: It has been more than a year since Afghanistan fell to the Taliban. In August 2021, 125,000 persons were evacuated to save them from reprisals, including likely death, because they or a family member had worked for or aided US forces. Most of those who came to the US were given an immigration status of Humanitarian Parole. This status gives the right to live in the US for two years. If a person does not obtain a new status within that time, they are subject to deportation. Right now, tens of thousands who risked their lives to help us are living with uncertainty and fear for the future. This is unconscionable. It is essential that Congress pass the Afghan Adjustment Act NOW. Go to this link now to register your support for prompt passage.
Thank you.
